If a picture with a width of 8 inches is made smaller using a ratio of similarity of 2:1, what is the new width of the picture?

    Let's try making a proportion. Those usually help. Using the variables 8, 2, 1, and an unknown value of x, how can we set this up?

    8 /x = 2 / 1 Because 8 is proportional to 2, so an unknown number related to 8 is proportional to 1.
