- anonymous

we are solving for x right?

- anonymous

yes

- tiffanymak1996

check your answer:
x=-14
x/7 -8
= (-14)/7 -8
=-2-8
=-10

- anonymous

no no you can't do that when x/7 no

- tiffanymak1996

why?

- anonymous

whenever you see / it means divide

- anonymous

so therefore we x divided by 7

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, i know, when you change sides, it becomes mutiplying

- anonymous

correct

- anonymous

???

- tiffanymak1996

but you have to change sides with addition (or subtraction first before you can change sides with division)

- anonymous

so it should be 7x=-14

- anonymous

then divide by 7?

- anonymous

no it's divided here so that can not happen

- anonymous

anytime you have something divided by something you times it

- anonymous

in order for the x or whatever you are solving for.

- anonymous

ok, let's do this one for clarity.......1-n/5=12

- anonymous

subtract -1 from both sides...

- anonymous

you have n/5=11

- anonymous

so the answer is 55?

- tiffanymak1996

negative sign!

- tiffanymak1996

you should have
-n/5 =11

- anonymous

-11?

- anonymous

oh, I see!!!

- anonymous

guys if you are doing this right than have X=??

- anonymous

-55

- tiffanymak1996

1- n/5 =12
1 -1 -n/5 =12-1
-n/5 =11
-n=55
n=-55

- anonymous

yipee!

- tiffanymak1996

gr8!
just make sure you don't get confused with the signs

- anonymous

oh I see what you are doing now, I go step by step that is why I was thrown off by what you did

- tiffanymak1996

sry!

- anonymous

6t +3=-7

- anonymous

subtract 3 from both sides

- tiffanymak1996

and you can always check your answers by substituting x=? in you equation

- anonymous

6t=-10

- anonymous

divide by 6?

- tiffanymak1996

yes

- anonymous

answer is -2?

- tiffanymak1996

what is -10 divided by 6?

- anonymous

something isn't right, that is not one of my answwer choices

- anonymous

10 goes into 2 five and 2 goes into 6 3 so the answer is -5/3

- tiffanymak1996

well your steps are all correct...

- anonymous

I didn't have the lowest denominator

- tiffanymak1996

usually the answers are in simplest form, so simplify your fractions

- tiffanymak1996

what choices do you have?

- anonymous

Tiffany I am so sorry about this, I was trying to walk through the steps here so you could ask questions. if you have this I will go

- anonymous

I have -5/3 as an answer

- anonymous

no before you said -2

- anonymous

right, but godorovg came up with -5/3 and I have that as an answer choice

- anonymous

I did not simplify

- anonymous

unless it says to do it I would leave as is

- anonymous

15=-15-8u

- anonymous

add 15 to both sides

- anonymous

30-8u

- anonymous

30=-8u

- anonymous

then what?

- anonymous

divide by -8?

- tiffanymak1996

yes

- anonymous

15/-4?

- anonymous

-15/4?

- tiffanymak1996

yes

- anonymous

I need help with this one
0=1/6y+8=

- anonymous

subtract 8 from both sides

- tiffanymak1996

yes

- anonymous

0-8 is 0?

- anonymous

-8?

- tiffanymak1996

yes, -8

- anonymous

-8=1/6y

- anonymous

now what?

- anonymous

can I help here, this problem you are making it harder than it has be

- tiffanymak1996

because the variable is in the denominator, therefore we have to switch it to the other side

- tiffanymak1996

-8=1/6y
-8(6y)=1/6y times 6y

- tiffanymak1996

so you multiply both sides with 6y

- anonymous

yes that is right, although when you first start this collect all a like terms and move then to one side and than times through the number being divided

- anonymous

show me

- anonymous

okay let us take this one x/7-8=-10 now here is how I would do this
First take the -8 and add 8 to the -10 so now we have this x/7=-10+8 than take this and do the sub to get -2 so now we have x/7=-2 once you have than take the seven ant times to the two so now we have X= -14 like that

- anonymous

ok

- anonymous

-8=1/6y?

- anonymous

okay now you tell me

- anonymous

multiply both sides by 1/6?

- tiffanymak1996

you multiply both sides with 6y

- anonymous

yes

- anonymous

but it is 1/6 not just six

- anonymous

so y=1/6x8?

- anonymous

yes

- anonymous

or 48?

- tiffanymak1996

it should be y=1/-48

- anonymous

oh yes, because it was a -8

- tiffanymak1996

since:
1/6y =-8
1/(6 times-8) =y
so, y=1/-48

- anonymous

yes it that is the y=1/-48

- anonymous

okay, thanks guys! I'm tired...going to bed, goodnight! Thanks for your help!

- anonymous

hey no problem glad I could you help you :)

- tiffanymak1996

gd nite!

- anonymous

tiffany great job!!

- tiffanymak1996

u too!

- tiffanymak1996

it's funny that when erinhass says good night , it's actually good morning for me. :)

- anonymous

yeah and it's night time where I am as well

- tiffanymak1996

u live in the states?

- anonymous

yes Portland Ore

- tiffanymak1996

oh, good for u, i've always wanted to live in the states

- anonymous

yeah funny thing I have always wanted to leave the States

- tiffanymak1996

guess we would all like to explore more.

- anonymous

no not to just explore, it falls under the job market here stinks and the education system is messed up for kids, although I don't have any/

- tiffanymak1996

i'm a victim under the education system in hong kong :(

- anonymous

yeah i have heard about that as well. I am a math person that you can graphs in my head and will be studying Engineering Physics soon

- anonymous

I am what some would call human calc

- tiffanymak1996

:) good for you, sometimes i do that , and miss steps in exams, got a b instead of a, frustrating

- anonymous

yeah, that is why I tell all people that i work step by step in that way you can go back to see what is wrong.

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, i know, that's why i have to be extra careful when i'm doing my exams. And i do tutoring, helps a lot with my presentation skills

- anonymous

it drives me nuts sometimes on here when I see people skipping around. that is just plain doesn't make sense to me

- tiffanymak1996

sometimes people skip unintentionally, you know, they calculate in their head, and skipped a few steps, sometimes they don't notice it.

- anonymous

yes true and may be this is something I will have to deal with, still I can not understand why skip steps what does that prove?

- tiffanymak1996

i personally think if one is confident with that particular question, and skipping a little steps is alright, just don't skip major ones, step on scrap papers, yes you can skip, but steps in exams, no.

- tiffanymak1996

i just tell myself be considerate, and help the techer go through the papers as smoothly as possible, work hard for years just to make sure i won't skip anything.

- anonymous

you just made a fan.

- tiffanymak1996

u too.:), and thx.

- anonymous

That is what I try to do here, only that I want the person I am helping to tell what they know and I help from that point

- anonymous

I don't just do the work for them..

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, sorry about that , will work hard for that, for me it's kind of harder to explain when not face to face

- anonymous

yeah, I can how it could be hard for you, but if you want sometime I can give you tips on to do things a little better only if you want tips

- anonymous

*see

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, of course, pls do, i'm all ears :)

- anonymous

okay first what type of math do you help with this mostly?

- tiffanymak1996

algebra, calculas, and the basics, just high school stuff.

- anonymous

okay with all these subjects, you need to get the student in which you are helping to tell what they need help with.

- anonymous

than before you do any of the work have them show you what they know about that problem already and ask to see what they are having trouble with

- tiffanymak1996

ok

- anonymous

than once the it is clear, work the problem by typing it out in words and than draw it like you were doing. In the typing step by step always so the student can see what is happening where

- tiffanymak1996

ok, thx a lot!

- anonymous

sometimes it won't matter if draw the problem if student doesn't get what is going on. So that is why I type it out in all steps

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, i find that if students can figure out the problem themselves, it has a greater impression on them

- anonymous

that is always my goal as well.

- anonymous

for example this x/7-8=-10 the student wasn't getting it the whole thing that is why I typed out the steps to show that they are making it too hard.

- anonymous

also to get the student to ask questions as well

- tiffanymak1996

yeah, interaction helps.

- anonymous

A must in math, because you and the student have to be involved in order to teach

- anonymous

also just know you won't be there when they are tested. so have the student do the work and you just guide them

- anonymous

unless they just not getting it.

- tiffanymak1996

absolutly right, are you like, a teacher?

- anonymous

No. I am a Physics Engineering major in college

- tiffanymak1996

cool, always have love physics, physics rocks!

- anonymous

yeah, and bio sucks

- tiffanymak1996

same here!

- anonymous

Chem and Physics oh yeah,,

- tiffanymak1996

uh huh

- anonymous

Bio not on your life

- anonymous

Anything to do with math I love

- tiffanymak1996

sry, mom needs me to have lunch, gotta go.

- anonymous

okay have nice day

- anonymous

cya latter

- tiffanymak1996

talk later :)
