The more academic definition of hacking refers to timesaving techniques, algorithms, and tricks that help build more elegant and efficient software. e.g. there are many 'hacks' that are needed in web programming to deal with browser compatibility issues. e.g. x & (x1)  a bitwise hack that eliminates the rightmost bit
