how do you get idle working?

    Idle should "just plain work" if you've installed python correctly. Can you describe what issue you're having and perhaps a bit of information about your PC? Are you running Windows/Linux/Mac? If, for some reason, IDLE didn't install correctly, you should test python from the command line and see if it works that way to determine whether it's just an issue with IDLE. If neither works, perhaps reinstall python. If python works, but IDLE doesn't, you might try installing WIng101 (an alternate free ide) and see if that works for you.
