Let chickens be x and goat be y. As we know that chicken have two legs and goat have four legs. 2x + 4y = 496. Total animals = 142 i.e. x+y = 142

x + y = 142 x = 142 y (1) 2x + 4y = 196 (2) Substituting equation (1) on (2) 2(142y) + 4y = 192 by solving these you will get the value of y then put the value in eqn. (1), you will get the x.
