The best advice would be don't rush to writing code. Think the problem through, break it down, and then keep breaking it down until you're forced to write code. Consider the strange cases, usually the minimum or maximum, the first iteration or the last iteration. Write defensive code, code that can handle human error or malice.

One more thing, document what's going on in your code thoroughly. Variable names can help a lot with this. One of the hardest things to do is pick up someone else's code, or code you wrote months or years ago and figure out exactly what's going on with it.

Read the syllabus, follow the lectures, read the book or similar text, do the problems. Get plenty of sleep, eat well and exercise.
