In the first lecture, he says, Photovoltaic = photo or light +electricity. Not to be confused with solar collectors.

When light fall on solar cell , a potential difference is created. Photo + voltaic

Photo= light in greek and voltaic in reference to Allessandro Volta an italian physicist and inventor of the electric battery. Solar cells convert sunlight energy into electricity while solar collectors deal with sun heat.
