## californiagurl9 3 years ago How do you work out the median for a stem and leaf diagram?

Plot your points, i will show an example for you.

6+7=13 13/2=6.5 Your median is 6.5

I don't really understand this...

7. Lukecrayonz

Okay, i'll explain more:)

A stem and leaf plot shows the number on the left representing the place number of the right digit. I.E, in the graph above, you have column 0. You have the numbers 03, 06, 09. For column 1, you have 12, 15, 16, 19. For column 2, you have 21, 23.

10. Lukecrayonz

The median is the middle number.

11. Lukecrayonz

So, write the numbers. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 16, 19, 21, 23.

12. Lukecrayonz

Cross off a number on the left, then on the right, counting towards the middle until you have one number left.

15. Lukecrayonz

Your median, is 15. It is the middle number.

Thank you! I understand now :)

wait one more thing...if there are a lot of digits in the leaf column, does this process still apply the same way?

18. Lukecrayonz

Yes! Exactly the same.

Okay thank you so much!
