    m/4+8=17 add -8 to both sides m/4 = 9 multiply 4 to both sides m = 36

    First step brings the 8 to the other side of the equation Second step gets m alone on the left You are allowed to do anything you want to an algebra problem as long as you do it to both sides

    M/4= 17 - 8 M/4 = 9 M = 9*4 M = 36
