you complete the square inside the parentheses of \[\frac{1}{3}\bigg(x^2+6x + 9 \bigg)\] then multiply through with the 1/3

Again, like much of math, when in doubt factor and see if it helps. This is pretty easy after factoring the 1/3 out.
