Read “In Memoriam, [To Sleep I give my powers away]” by Lord Alfred Tennyson to answer the question. To Sleep I give my powers away; My will is bondsman to the dark; I sit within a helmless bark, And with my heart I muse and say: O heart, how fares it with thee now, That thou should fail from thy desire, Who scarcely darest to inquire, "What is it makes me beat so low?" Something it is which thou hast lost, Some pleasure from thine early years. Break thou deep vase of chilling tears, That grief hath shaken into frost! Such clouds of nameless trouble cross All night below the darkened eyes; With morning wakes the will, and cries, "Thou shalt not be the fool of loss." The rhyme scheme of Tennyson’s poem can best be described as abab. abba. abcd. aabb. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 5 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Read Emily wingspaninson’s poem to answer the question. “My life closed twice before its close— It yet remains to see If Immortality unveil A third event to me So huge—so hopeless to conceive As these that twice befell. Parting is all we know of heaven— And all we need of hell.” wingspaninson uses dashes in her poem to cause the same confusion for the reader that wingspaninson was experiencing due to her grief. accelerate the pace of the poem, creating a frantic and disjointed mood for the reader. surprise her readers with her belief that parting contains elements of heaven and hell. emphasize the thoughts that come before and after the dash and make the reader pause. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 6 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Read Emily wingspaninson’s poem to answer the question. “My life closed twice before its close— It yet remains to see If Immortality unveil A third event to me So huge—so hopeless to conceive As these that twice befell. Parting is all we know of heaven— And all we need of hell.” Fill in the blanks with the correct analysis: The ______________________ and _____________________ used in this poem contribute to the rhythm and mood. alliteration and assonance consonance and onomatopoeia repetition and alliteration rhyme and repetition -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 7 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Read “Love’s Philosophy” by Percy Bysshe Shelley to answer the question. The fountains mingle with the river And the rivers with the ocean, The winds of heaven mix for ever With a sweet emotion; Nothing in the world is single, All things by a law divine In one another's being mingle— Why not I with thine? See the mountains kiss high heaven, And the waves clasp one another; No sister-flower would be forgiven If it disdain'd its brother; And the sunlight clasps the earth, And the moonbeams kiss the sea— What is all this sweet work worth If thou kiss not me? Shelley’s use of imagery and questioning create a tone of overwhelming joy. deep compassion. persuasive passion. nostalgic longing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 8 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Read the following excerpt from a news article in order to answer the question. “It has been almost one year since the mysterious abduction of eighteen year old Stephanie Seward. Her mother has tirelessly searched for her, posted signs in stores and neighborhoods, gone door to door throughout the community, and pled with anyone to come forward with any information. She has struggled with despair during this time, losing her job and her home as she poured all of her energy into searching for Stephanie, but she always held out hope. Yesterday, all of these months of fear and longing came to an end. Stephanie has been found! Her captor, Henry Hadres, willingly released her. His explanation for his actions: he just wanted someone to love, someone to brighten his life.” These events mirror a Greek myth. Choose the headline that most accurately conveys the events and an allusion to the myth. “Zeus Reunited with Long Lost Daughter” “Persephone Makes Her Way Home” “Psyche and Mother: Tearful Reunion” “Demeter Turns Himself in to Authorities”

The following business letter needs some work. Read the letter to answer the question. Square Box Company 56789 South Bend Circle King, Illinois 55544 Hello Mr. or Ms. Smith, 1 Would you consider this donation to our school? We would love to talk with you and share our plans for the floats if that would interest you. Please let me know if you are willing and able to help us in this way. Thank you for supporting your local schools. 2 I am writing to you today to ask for a donation to our school. I go to school at King High School just down the road from your box factory. My name is Sara Samuel, and I am the Student Council President. 3 We are preparing for our annual Homecoming parade and would like to create floats out of boxes. We have a great plan but need the resources to accomplish it. We need 75 boxes and were wondering if your company would be willing to donate them. Our sponsor said that wecould provide you with a receipt for tax deduction purposes, and we would make a banner to put on the floats that proudly proclaims “Donated by Square Box Company.” I think this would be a great advertisement to the community since everyone comes out to watch the Homecoming parade. Sincerely Yours: Sara Samuel Student Council President 1234 NW Madison Street King, Illinois 55544 August 24, 2010 p.s. You can call me at 222-222-2222 with any questions or comments. Thanks! What grammatical revisions does the student need to make in order to follow proper business letter expectations? Use a colon in her salutation and a comma in her closing. Use a semicolon in her salutation and a colon in her closing. Use commas to separate each line of the two addresses. Use an apostrophe after “Yours” in the closing of the letter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 10 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) The following business letter needs some work.
