Because they haven't implemented this feature. It's been suggested quite a few times.
Has it just been ignored every time, or have they given a reason why it should be less user friendly?
If I remember correctly, it got positive comments from the admins. They might still be thinking of adding it in or maybe they came up with some reason not to.

@Kainui I strongly agree with you that their should be an option to edit answers. You can put your feedback here-http://openstudyfeedback.uservoice.com/forums/95895-customer-feedback?lang=en
its not a real priority in that the answers are given in real time and any mistakes or typos can be explained while the interaction takes place.
It's not very easy if that something is a long post that contains equations in it. It just mucks it all up honestly and makes it messier when trying to explain things.

Mods only agree to disagree.
messing up an equation can be a pain ... i agree with that
They played with the "edit response" feature. There was a spate of cheating incidents with students from online schools providing answers and then 'editing' their answers to blank spaces to erase their digital footprints. So the feature was taken away. I thought that the ability to edit questions should have been taken away at the same time, but the admins didn't go the full ten years for some reason.
Actually, I don't recall us ever getting around to implementing edit response. I know we intended to, but it didn't happen. Heh. That said, whenever we get around to the bells and whistles list that'll probably be one of the items we hit.
Cool, sounds good.
