July 20th, 1861 Dear Emma, Tomorrow the generals say we will attack the enemy at a place called Bull Run. I am fearful although I know it is unmanly. I have a foreboding that this will be a terrible struggle where the will of our President Lincoln will be pitted against the stubbornness of our southern brothers. Keep me in your heart, James
