What does a coral polyp secrete that actually builds cups that create the coral (this substance has a common and a scientific name – make sure to know both)? Describe the physical structure of a coral polyp. What is zooxanthellae? What kind of organism is a zooxanthellae? What benefit do the zooxanthellae provide to the coral reef relationship (to the coral polyps)? The coral polyp and zooxanthellae algae provide food for each other. Which type of symbiotic relationship do they share? – Choose one: parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, mimicry What are the two ways that a coral polyp gains the food nutrition it needs for survival? Would zooxanthallae, which conduct photosynthesis, need sunlight to exist? Why do deep water corals (which lack zooxanthellae) tend to grow upwards instead of across?
