    Engineering bacteria to produce insulin is a use of recombinant DNA (SaveahThomas's answer), I think is correct. Crossing two apples to make better ones requires no DNA manipulation, just pollenation. Breeding a horse and a donkey does not alter the DNA sequence of either animal, and most plants are naturally polyploid.
