It's not really my area of expertise (nor a good topic for the OpenStudy feedback group); however, I'll do what I can.
I would structure the essay with three main paragraphs, each devoted to a single aspect or effect of offshore drilling. And I would discuss the pros and cons of that effect in that paragraph. For example, one big class of effects of offshore drilling is environmental: in favour of drilling, you could point out that as theoretically practiced, off shore drilling techniques are supposedly rather clean (you could get some numbers from industry to support that statement). As a con, you could point out that off shore drilling is rarely practiced as cleanly as in the ideal models and point to chronic pollution (for example, in the waters off Nigeria and the African Gold Coast) and to oil spills like the Deepwater Horizon Incident a few years ago, when British Petro won a Darwin award for proving by demonstration that the entire scientific community wrong was wrong in our belief that water and oil do not mix.
And I would include a nice intro paragraph and conclusion paragraph too.
thanks that's what i was thinking of doing with intro introducing the three reasons and then a paragraph each discussing the three points and then a conclusion paragraph summarizing it all i just dont know wether to right an essay on oil drilling being good or not so far for it not being good i have the reasons global warming and polution harming wildlife i can not however seem to find a third point.
Consider economic effects? Offshore drilling produces a great amount of oil for the United States (you might want to include a statistic on how much, and what proportion of energy actually does come from off shore drilling) and a great amount of revenue for the economy. For that matter, you could talk about energy self sufficiency vs. dependence on Middle Eastern oil and energy resources.
