The rectangular dance floor is twice as long as it is wide. The tent surrounds the dance floor, leaving some space (7 feet in each direction) for guests to mingle and cool off after dancing. This extra space (represented by the grey area) has an area of 952 square feet. Your task is to find the dimensions of the dance floor.

    The dance floor is 18 ft wide and 36 ft long.

    Let's say that the width of the dance floor = x ft Length = 2x ft Area = 2x² sqft Tent width = x + 7 + 7 = x + 14 ft Tent length = 2x + 7 + 7 = 2x + 14 ft Total tent area = (x + 14)(2x + 14) sqft = 2x² + 42x + 196 sqft The grey area sounds like it's (2x² + 42x + 196) - 2x² sqft 42x + 196 = 952 42x = 756 x = 18
