    When an altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and the lengths of the segments of the hypotenuse are 4 and 9, then you can find the length of the altitude by seeing the two triangles as similar. Therefore, the length of the altitude is similar to the length of the base. In order to find actual lengths you must know the other sides of the triangle.
