American writers like Walt Whitman focused on carving out an image of American writing that broke from the typical fixation upon emulating European writers. A lot of American writers focused on particularly American issues, like slavery, politics, etc that pertained specifically to the U.S. (Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Jungle). European writers focused on attitudes and themes that sprung from their own issues, like European wars, European cultural movements, etc. Voltaire is a good example of this. European writers tended to write about religion because Europe was so defined by issues stemming from Christianity
