The Watergate scandal had profound consequences for the modern world. As a result of the cover up, the Republican Party moved to the right, Congress attempted to limit presidential power, and it reinforced American perceptions of government. With the presidency temporarily weakened, the Soviets expanded their revolution and the Vietnam War reignited. In the end, the Watergate scandal realigned global and domestic politics until the economic malaise of the Carter years brought about Reagan. His presidency was jeopardized by his prior unpopularity piled on top of that, which ultimately led to his self induced resignation as president.
