Trick Question! There is no simple answer to this and none of them are fully correct or incorrect. Here is some information A) Nuclear power does pollute the air during the refining of the ore (pure metals do not come from ground), then energy (often fossil fuel power) is used during the enrichment stages. B) Waste is more of an Issue in US where the newest reactor was constructed in 1977. Newer active designs in France for example can re-use spent fuel from older reactors without further processing. Thus you can use up most of the radioactive material by using several different reactors. This is not capable in the US due to our outdated nuclear plants. Thus, our waste is a larger portion of materials than other countries and we must find a safe way to dispose of it or invest in new plants to reuse the waste from the older ones. C) Fossil fuel waste is more of a problem than often admitted to. Coal does not fully burn and leaves a residue in the plant known as coal ash. This is often kept as a slurry in a man made pond by the power plant. There have been several environmental disasters caused by these ponds bursting and sending tons of this coal ash into rivers. This material often contains high levels of mercury and arsenic which are both toxic. All methods to generate electricity pollute at some point!! Solar -- cells are expensive, require chemicals based on petroleum, require manufacturing (using electricity from fossil fuel), etc. Wind -- inefficient, requires refining of metals, production, transportation on trains trucks, boats etc -Yahoo answers.
