    4. In her essay "Writing Short Stories" Flannery O'Connor says this about characterization: "You can't cut characters off from their society and say much about them as individuals." "You can't say anything meaningful about the mystery of personality unless you put that personality in a believable and significant social context." Consider the quotations above. Then pick a story from Semester A and evaluate how the social context and the characters work together not only to provide a vivid setting, but also to help explain and develop the characters' thoughts, words, and actions. (10 points) 45. Respond in a well-organized essay. Make sure the answer is written in complete sentences. (25 pts) In the middle of the 19th century, political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville claimed, "The inhabitants of the United States have...properly speaking, no literature." for number 45, think about writers like Thomas Paine and his pamphlet, Common Sense. He used a very passionate way of writing to describe the reasons he believed why America needed to gain independence from Great Britain. He also used persuasion to get others to agree with his thoughts and beliefs on the mater. Think about the writers and their stories that you've read. What unique ways do they use to write their stories?

for number 44, perhaps try Edgar Allan Poes story, The Tell-Tale Heart. The narrator tells the story of how and why he murders an old man with a horrible pale blue eye that is covered with a film. The narrator confesses to the police and through his words and actions we can almost hear the pounding of the old mans heart that he seems to hear. He convinces himself that the police can hear it too. And so he shows them the dead body that he had hid in beneath the house to prove to them that he was not crazy, he had heard the sound. In the story, Poe gives a very descriptive setting of the room and the narrator's thoughts throughout the story.
