Under the reign of Moctezuma I, historical texts referring to the Mexica or the people of conquered regions were destroyed and replaced with official Aztec histories. Why might the Aztecs have pursued this policy?

    The Aztecs believed only Aztec priests had the ability to write accurate histories. Rewriting history helped unify the empire by inventing a common origin. Aztec scholars believed that the texts were full of factual inaccuracies. It was an effort to make the Aztec language more important.
