Solve for x, given that AB =BC. Is triangle ABC equilateral?

    Equilateral means all 3 sides are equal. Since AB = BC, then 7 = x-1 x = 8 So, the side (x-1) = 8-1=7 Now, x-3 must equal the other sides to be equilateral. Now, since x = 8, then (x-3) = 8-3 = 5 So clearly 5 is not equal to 7, so the triangle is not equilateral. You can do this by inspection as well... since x represents the same number all the time, you see that (x-1) is not equal to (x-3) (because x is always the SAME number).
