    An ordered pair gives you directions in a coordinate plane: (x,y). It tells you where to go on the x axis and where to go on the y axis. If a point lies on one axis or the other, then either x or y must be 0. So if x is 0, you only go on the y axis and if y is zero, you only travel along the x axis. Hope that helps.
