* Many of the behavior problems that moderators spend time dealing with arise in chat * A lot of that bad behavior is boring teenage attention seeking * With fewer moderators and admins on the site, policing bad behavior has become harder and more tedious * The idea of eliminating the chat functionality of the site has been a question in the past With those four premises in mind, I would like to suggest that Moderators have a new trick added to their dance moves: the ability to shut down a chat room for up to 10 minutes.

I agree with this. Something needs to be done about the behavior on here.

Lol I bet it would be affective. You should totally do it. Even two minutes and they won't know what to do with themselves haha

What would prevent the trolls from moving to another chat room? To be effective such a ban would have to close all chat rooms on the site, which seems unduly draconian for all the behaving users. Though it would give the community a compelling reason to keep its own in line, or just cover it up and not report trolls. Alternative: consider the ability to ban a specific user from chat rooms, rather than close all chats for everyone else too.

What they want is an audience most of the time is an audience. If they could all be shunted off to an obscure chat room (we have many) with almost no audience, that would be fine. But I don't think that's what would happen. I think they would eventually get bored and find somewhere else altogether.

Good point. Something definitely should be done to make this better.

This isn't a bad idea at all. We've thrown around some other ideas for helping to deal with chat, as well. I'm hoping to have some time towards the end of February or beginning of March to try to deal with some of that and do some more work on the performance issues we've been seeing. Fingers crossed, there's a different project I have to wrap up and hand off to someone else before then. If that goes well, then hopefully some love will be given!

In the meantime, if you think they deserve it, mods should go ahead and suspend users for bad behavior in chat! I trust your judgement, Powerful Mods! I also like the idea of shunting them off to a different room. Like a detention room!

I Love that idea @Preetha ^

whenever they log on for a specified time interval they get placed in OpenStudy limbo/purgatory; now if shadow can program up something that mimics these awful lags .... that would be great :)

IMO NO ONE EVER uses the chat for their actual intended purposes. Sometimes people post their math questions in math chat, but they will post it in every other chat also. I see users chatting at the same time in 4 windows at once. What's the point of having 50 subjects with 50 chat rooms to moderate? Complete waste of mod time when I can look at one chat, instead of 6. WE NEED ONLY 1 CHAT ROOOM. Simple, 1 OS chat where people will log into and chat. It shouldn't automatically sign you in because only so many people chat on this site. I see chat rooms on sites all the time with forums just so some users can chat with each other. IMO we should use an IRC type chat where mods have power to BAN users and kick them from chat if needed. The only way now to get rid of a user is to suspend them, which sometimes we want them out of the site, but sometimes only chat itself. I don't think it would be too hard to get an IRC channel and set it up for users to chat. It would save space, mod time, and even organize chats so people don't have to go back and forth, which has happened to me before. I'll be in math chat, they will ask in biology, answer in biology and they answer in Math...

Also another thing we should probably implement if we don't switch to 1 chat is. 1. Spam monitor/warning. If you post too many messages, too fast it should stop posting and warn you. 2. Curse counter. If you curse, go around the word filter, or anything else that looks like it's bad languages you will counter++; Once your counter gets to lets say 5, you're suspended.
