I agree with this %110. I know they have lives and I understand they want mature people and respectful people, but they are way to picky about why they want a mod to be.There are very trusted mature people on this website EVERYDAY that would be perfect for a moderator but they don't make them one. They are way to picky and I think they should start taking applications for a atleast like 5 or 6 Mod rolls. I myself want to be one but even if I cant i think they should make a few other people a mod.
I honestly think I should have a Moderator role. I think @Preetha should read this, along with the other posts about the SAME thing.
The problem has already been addressed by myself actually. Mods need to be able to handle things and be on. I also want to say that I sometimes leave my OS tab open so I might appear as "online" but I am not in OS. I try to always check once in awhile to make sure what's up, but yes there are mods I haven't seen on for awhile, but as anyone would say we all have lives. The problem IMO isn't the activeness(it is one part) we just need a bigger team. We need mods, super mods, and admins. Everything has been discussed though.
Well I mean..we aren't everywhere all the time.. I look like I am online, but literally probably have my tab open while I am doing other things like homework with some friends
yes, a position as mod would be nice, especially when given to an active user (hint hint).
I'm here all freaking day. Well, I used to be. But they decided not to make me a mod, so I saw no point in being here more than an hour or two a day.
I think they're "way too picky" about who they choose for a good reason.
Well I think we all can agree we need more Moderators. I think that would be for the best at least for a while.
yes, we do (HINT. HINT.)
(Hint Hint) Cough Cough COUGH!!!!!
"We need Mods who actually do something.... " Case 1) We have mods online, but we(mods) are not doing anything. i) How can you know we are not doing anything? Unless we step into the chat and warn in the chat, or we suspend a user so that he becomes offline, how can you tell if we have done anything? I think you can't see us issue warnings to the users, right? Sometimes, I'm really discouraged to see complaints like this while you guys don't know how much we have done behind the scenes. We warn, and warn, then suspend. When they come back with another account (and use inappropriate language), we suspend again. Spending at least an hour to suspend such accounts is commonplace. Still, you guys still complain that we aren't doing anything, trolls still come back, nothing has changed. It's just not fair. ii) We are not really here As @KonradZuse and @karatechopper mentioned, sometimes, we just log in here, but browsing other websites and doing something else. I know you don't want to hear about it, but that's just the truth. We have our own lives (study/work) other than moderatoring this site. We can't stare at this site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make sure everything goes right. iii) Technical issue As mentioned before, sometimes, there are some technical issues - when we are offline, we are being shown online. In this case, I'm sorry, but we really can't do anything since we're not even here. Case 2) We don't have enough mods. I think it's not that we need more mods to help moderate this site. It should be we need more *good* mods to help moderate this site. I guess it's not difficult to make more mods, but it takes time to pick good ones. You may say it's picky, but if admins didn't select mods carefully? Who would be the ones to suffer? We will have more mods - it's just a matter of time. Not only are mods/admins responsible to keep this site appropriate, we, as ordinary users, all have the responsibility to keep it appropriate (by pay attention to our own behaviour as well as reminding others to behave well).
(PS: That's just my opinion) Note: I don't often look at the chat window. So, maybe I'll miss those inappropriate chat if you don't report them. :S
I agree with you @Callisto i honestly do. But anyway you guys (Mods & Admin) put it a large amount of us think we need to recruit more mods.
I like mods who do mod like things. I also like mods who know their place. I even like mods who understand they can't do everything, but do their best. I like Calli. :)
I swear if I was a moderator I WOULD BE ON TOP OF THIS EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY
the mods need better tools for dealing with the trolls. Suspending an account does nothing for a user that just creates a new one ... ad nauseum.
What good is a warning? they click x, or close or whatever like any other pop up and dont read it; what good is a suspension? the just make new accounts. What good is a kick? its fun to do lol ... we can do an ip check .... but that seems a bit redundant.
Why not IP ban??
Mods have 4 buttons .... and alot of red deletes. Do you see anyway to implement an IP ban from those tools I listed?
Well I'm not a mod so how would I know if you guys can D:?
Why you use an example out of me Dx
You should be able to fit one more though :p
The point is, its easy to say that the mods arent doing anything; but we are doing the best we can with the tools provided to us.
Wouldn't it just be easier to have a meeting of all the mods and owlford and talk about something monthly?
Hello SWAG, look at your username. now back to a mods, now back to yours, now back to a mods. Fortunately, you aren't him/her. But if you stopped using mod speak and switched to ambassador you could sound like...an ambassador. Look down, back up. Where are you? You're on OpenStudy. With the title your username could be. What's in your title? Back at me. I have it. It's an A with a circle around it that you love. Look again. The circled A is now purple. Anything can happen.
@amistre64 & other mods. I think we have established MANY times that you guys have lives of your own and & that you guys cant always moniter everything or you leave your tabs open. Which is why many people think we should just get more mods on here. Their on MANYYYYYY users who are actually on all day everyday that would be perfect for the role. I think that should be recognized already. I understand you guys look for certain things in a user to be a moderator, well many people here have those “qualities” you guys look for I just think an Admin should take the time to interview them or what ever they need to do to recruit them! Either way I support you guys and what you do! I would love to help out the community with you guys to be honest.
@SWAG lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE
THATS WHERE U GOT IT FROM!!!! HAHA I love that video..
I'm on a horse.
smh I can't believe you didn't know XD
I know the commercial just never remembered it!
Are you trying to say i could be a Moderator if I stop talking or acting like one or something? O.o Which BTW I dont do on purpose, it is just how I talk sometimes when it is a serious situation.
Every mod on the site will throw ten cents into this one. 1. We need better tools. IP ban alone would make a huge difference. Ability to ban from chat, suspend messaging or posting abilities would be cool. Or fancy stuff like hell bans or slow bans - all would help. 2. To some extent the most time consuming problems (i.e., suspending new accounts coming back after suspension - which I once did for 2 hrs before I got an admin and an IP ban) could be automated. Like logging IPs of suspended users and blocking all new accounts made from that IP within something like a fifteen minute interval. No troll is going to move to a new coffee shop and new IP every time they get banned for very long. 3. I think the admins are always open to candidates for new mods. If you think someone would be good, please, please suggest them! 4. Bearing in mind that mods need to be rocks. Absolutely, doggedly beyond being baited into fights. Becca and SWAG... 5. I am not against providing ordinary users who have established themselves as mature with moddish abilities - perhaps the ability to warn, or the ability to give very short suspensions that would stop the problem long enough for a mod to come online? Or the ability to suspend from chat but not the rest of the site? 6. I have had quite a few log out errors, where I log off but everyone else sees me as online. And everyone expects me to be moderating, when I am cooking dinner, or at work, or asleep. And I'm truly sorry for all the people who ask my help at this time, and get no response. 7. This is a good discussion, and one we need all the ideas and input we can get.
again, we need more active mods (HINT. HINT.)
Damn peple are going hard on this still... Callisto wrote the mod Constitution as well :P. Also to you amby's who just became ambys I suggest you not ask for mod, as in any organization trying to hint to yourself, or make yourself feel as though you deserve it over others, you most likely WILL NOT get a mod spot. SWag you posted a screen shot flipping out, maybe report the user and wait? Also if any of you could see the report pool, I would think you would change your mind. Within 30mins - 1 hour of becoming a mod, I had 2 email pages filled of reports. As for chat issues, we are talking about how to go about chat, as chat is our biggest issue. My suggestion was a single chat for better moderation, but who knows.
PLEASE Consider me for Moderator, I will do what ever i can to help, even if it means being on EVERY DAY ALL DAY & Not being very chatty and getting baited. I would love to help out I have trying for this for a while. I agree with you all in your opinions, even your idea of partial Mod features for us users @blues. either way please consider me.
& @KonradZuse I did report them, it took over an hour for them to get suspended.
& I would not change my mind AT ALL, I deal with those things like that on other websites on a daily basis, i have been a Moderator before so I could handle it, especially because I am on EVERYDAY.
I also wouldn't mind just being a group Mod if possible. I know those features were tried and abused but I am sure I could manage.
There are many mods who are on every day, and deal with issues. There are many mods who have also modded other forums. Again it isn't really a mod issue as blues pointed out, there are certain changes needed. It's good that you reported them, and they were dealt with when they were able to be. I really don't know what has been going on for the past few days since I was at Universal Studios, but most reports are handled well. Once again, mods are always picked by how they are able to help out. Saying you will be the greatest mod ever have 0 positive affect on how I and most others will look at you for becoming a mod. As, I believe, being the newest mod on the team, I was asked to become a mod, I didn't request it. Users, mods, and admins asked me to fill out my amb application, and then I got into the mod process, I was choosen, and looked at, I didn't beg for it, I didn't even think I was going to become an amb, let alone a mod. If you really want to become a mod, show us your abilities, not talk about how good you will be. Keep reporting, being active, and helping out and if the mods/admins haven't looked at you, they will.
I realize that, but hey we all have to try to do something instead of always sitting around waiting for the opportunity right? I already do that with trying to find looking for a job & waited over a year for amby & I am not saying I will be the best, Just that I will be able to help. But I understand you. I have known for years here that asking is not the way AT ALL. But we all have to try one way or another, but I guess all I can do is keep doing my job and reporting. I just hope I am left in mind for a position.
I respect ALL mods here on OS but...if you are going to pick mods I think they should be active users in the chat pods because that is where all the drama happens and us NORMAL user here on OS have to try and calm people down and when everyone is done fighting here comes the mod wayyy to late. Just my opinion
^ My Point PARTIALLY.
@Swag I see your posts, and reports, and I know you're a good guy, that is why I say keep reporting, and all that, that's honestly all I did in Comp sci for awhile, and they needed me there. @iluvreading that's the thing that I mentioned above, the issue is CHAT. I suggested having an IRC chat where we can all log into ONE CHAT with modded users to ban peeps from CHAT ONLY. if you look at any chat, do you see any actual posts about the subject? I see peopel linking Math(most active topic) in Biology chat.. What's the point when people arte in 5 chats at once talking to each other? What's the point of modding 20 chats when we can mod 1? Even if we had 20000 mods, if someone starts spamming in a chat, it will still take time for them to see it, ban em, or get a report then ban em.
I actually agree with that @KonradZuse
Why not provide some more powers to ambassadors? They are more active and somewhat responsible... Mods might not engage themselves to see what is going in the chats but ambassadors can... I am not being selfish but I think this will be better than having 2-3 more mods because at the present time we have enough mods ..
what if....... everyone above certain SS gets mod power?
@modphysnoob That's not a particularly good idea in my opinion. Just because you're a high level would not make you a fantastic moderator. In fact, that's one of the reasons the the whole temporary group moderator thing was abolished ages ago. Personally, I don't have any fantastic ideas that I see would help this situation. However, I am definitely in support of giving ordinary moderators some kind of IP ban, or even instituting a temporary 15-minute IP ban to prevent spam from new accounts. That being said, since the issue seems to be that moderators are not on here enough/not being active enough, I will try to increase the time I spend on here this coming semester.
No OFFENSE.....but ambassadors DON'T need anything else. Most of the ambassador can barely handle there responsibility now. And some ambassador abuse the little purple A sooo if u give some MORE power to ambassador all i see is trouble .
perhaps if mod is a paid position?
Having seen what was said above, I think I'll stop hinting now.
How about a 5 minute suspension ability for ambies?
Really delete my comment? Haha thats cool to I guess ♥
Yolo there is no need for trouble all the time. Try being positive for once, you are always so negative towards users, come on, no need for that :)
Haha im positive towards Becca xD
Yes I have noticed you to are like a "tag team". You are rude towards other users but you are negative towards others. There is no place for that on OpenStudy and I am sure others will vouch for me on that.
Don't start this guys.
I am not, I am just saying to be nice :)
Sorry, I just feel like this needs to be done: #YOLOSWAG
