what happens immediatly after a mass extinction to the diversity of organism? what happens thousands years later?

    immediate effect is that there would be less diversity of organisms. As time progresses, (thousands of yrs later) diversity of organisms would return but the type of organisms would most likely be different from the type before the mass extinction.
