Well, the repetition of the word absurd and the absurdness of the entire story, refers to certain people called "Absurdists". Oscar Wilde was ahead of his time so to speak, because the era of "absurdists" wasn't until the 1950's. Of course, as you can probably tell from the title, the theme of absurd was echoed in the Theater of the Absurd. The importance of it however, from my point of view, is to show just how absurd this whole affair is. Although, there is another thing to take into account, and that is the definitions of "absurd" and "earnest". Absurd means senseless. Earnest means honest. The entire play, Jack is living a lie by saying his name is Ernest. Obviously that concept is absurd and senseless. Although, in the end he finds out that his true name IS Ernest, and therefore he was being quite honest. Miss Prism is the romantic interest, and Chasuble is the comic relief.
