To name a major arc, you would normally use 3 letters. if you were to only use 2 letters, then it is understood that you are referring to the smaller of the 2 arcs, meaning the arc that is formed along the shortest distance between the 2 points. when referring to a major arc name at least three points that lie along the arc, including the endpoints and at least one other point that lies on the arc that you are referring to.

The shorter arc joining two points on the circumference (edge) of a circle. (The larger arc is called the Major Arc)
