Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is now very much had its day. It is not only that it has flaws scientifically (this of course is not the be all and end all of a therapy as some therapies have no science base at all), it is also that it has as a core belief that if you find the cause of an emotional problem you will solve it.

humanistic theory: Lack of empirical evidence, the 'self help' therapy involved can teach narcissistic tendencies.
