Can anyone explain to me what the terms "melting pot" and "tossed salad" mean and how they relate to the united states?

    Well actually these terms relate to multicultures in the united states. I know that melting pot used to mean that immigrants came to america and adapted to being an american. Learned english, became citizen, so to speak beame an amerian. But I don't understand wht tossed salad means

    People refer to places like new york with a large amount of culture as a melting pot.... and I would assume tossed salad was the same thing but I have never heard that befor
