SnuggieLad one year ago Florida Virtual School students, Hopefully this is you your standards. Three of the members of OpenStudy have banded together to make a email in regards to the recent email sent to most math students. Naming no names the original email goes as follows.

original email: Hello FLVS Geometry Student! We have been experiencing a recent influx in the number of academic integrity violations involving a web site called “OpenStudy”. OpenStudy is a website we have tremendous concerns about from an academic integrity standpoint. Although they present themselves as a tutoring site, students are often not actually assisted and are instead simply sharing answers with one another. Our FLVS policy states that it is an integrity violation to veer away from FLVS curriculum and content and to visit web sources in an attempt to gain answers for assessments. You are not permitted to use OpenStudy, or any other web source outside of the FLVS Curriculum and Content, as a resource tool for your coursework. Use of OpenStudy is considered an integrity violation and result will result in zeros being issued, proctored exams being required, and possible removal/expulsion from FLVS being mandated. Posting our content questions to OpenStudy or any other site is a copyright violation and will result in investigation and legal action from Florida Virtual School Please remember the staff here at FLVS is dedicated to ensuring your success in your courses. Open communications with your instructors and use of the provided FLVS resources are your key to successful completion of your courses. If you need more information regarding academic integrity, you can visit the FLVS library or access the Academic Integrity link under course information. Thank you,

ok so why does this topic need to be made 5 times? We appreciate what you're doing, but when I see the same thing over and over it's not good. Especially with comments in each individual topic...

3. SnuggieLad

we have spent all night last night making an email in hopes it will resolve this issue. We will keep you posted on the outcome of this email. This is not an email from the administration of Openstudy this is an email from Members, Ambassadors and Modorators who see it fit. Below is the finished email in its full. ~@SnuggieLad First of all, I understand your concern about the amount of cheating occurring on http://www.OpenStudy.com/. As an ambassador on OpenStudy (I am poopsiedoodle, http://openstudy.com/users/poopsiedoodle), it is my job to enforce the Code of Conduct on OpenStudy. The first two rules in the Code of Conduct: OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process •Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution. •Have homework problems? We can help you - as long as you are looking to learn how to get your solution (and not just the answer). •Please do not copy and paste your problems. If people are going to spend time to help you, you should at least spend the time to ask your question as clearly as possible. Don't devalue the question/answer process! •Don't provide someone with just the answer - explain the process, and help guide them through understanding the problem. •Don't just provide the answer to a problem when someone else is in the middle of helping! But if you want to help, by all means, join in! Also saying, “Keep in mind that OpenStudy is an open, transparent system where everyone can see all your posts, chats, comments, questions and answers. So OpenStudy documents your greatness and your helpfulness. If on the other hand you do not follow our code or post inappropriate content that is creepy, rude, or violates your school's Honor Code, it is also openly viewable. We care about you. So our advice is to be nice and honest.” This includes making sure that other users do not cheat. I would like to inform you that not all of the OpenStudy users are cheaters. Please understand, this site is very helpful even though there are people who misuse it. It would be wrong to sacrifice the many for the misuse of the few. This is not a place like http://www.answers.yahoo.com/ where you can go and get an easy way out. This is a place where people can go and learn the material. We are cracking down on the cheating problem, and as time goes on, it is going away. Our moderators and ambassadors are working our best to provide the utmost user and educational experience possible. This is a website where you can go and connect with new people and collaborate to come to new answers and conclusions on your own! We do not pride ourselves on the mistakes some members are making against the code of conduct. We understand the importance of your educational system and we plan on working with you. We understand where you’re coming from with the email you have recently sent out. We see the problem of cheating as well and are beside ourselves. Our moderators are working overtime to provide an expeditious removal of this dishonorable behavior. We have many users who are devoted to the mission of OpenStudy and who make it their goal to weed out the culprits of tainted integrity. Our members that come from Florida Virtual School take offence to this. We have asked many of our users and they feel as though you are taking away a much needed study tool. OpenStudy does not give an easy way out. In all honesty, many people registered thinking it would be, but they were in for a rude awakening. As for the issue of plagiarism we agree with you. Two of our users have even started developing a cheating detector as seen here. There has also been a teacher from Connections Academy who has gotten fed up with their students cheating (who are known for asking for the answers for entire exams, including finals) that can be found here. This is proof that we do not condone the activities that you have mentioned in your message to students. We are trying to get our point across to the members that this is not an answer site like the aforementioned “Yahoo Answers” or “ChaCha”. They should come to us with the question worded differently and not copied and pasted. Even then, it is still not okay that people are abusing OpenStudy to just get answers on their tests. In no way do we support this. The administration of OpenStudy is sending out an email in hopes of correcting the predicament at hand. Please don’t take this email the wrong way. We are in no way trying to be disrespectful or rude to the management of Florida Virtual School. We would like to reach out a hand to FLVS to help us stop this without going to the extreme of banning the whole site. We would like if we could possibly get a transcript from you listing all of your questions. That way, if something is copied and pasted from an assignment of yours, we can report/delete it or close the post and give a reason. WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU! Not against you. We want you to be pleased with the help we give and WANT your students to partake in it. We have people on the site who greatly adore FLVS and in no way want to see Florida Virtual stop this site from giving them a helping hand. We want to give assistance to the teachers of the school system. Below is a true email from one of our students that was sent to a teacher in their school district talking about the effectiveness of openstudy. “I wanted to also tell you about a site called openstudy.com that a lot of teachers don’t know about … it is a place ran by mods and members where kids can go ask questions and get help from teachers and other students and study together. The Code of Conduct is very clear which is why I wanted to tell you about it…there is no cheating… you can’t give any answers! You can help a fellow student study and help teach them if they don’t understand. The language is CLOSELY guarded and if you give an answer directly you can be banned from the site. There are people watching at all times so no false information can be passed. This is not like yahoo answers where you put in a question and someone does all the thinking for you. This site makes sure you learn and doesn’t give an easy way out. I tell you about this because you used to always say there are no stupid questions. Kids (including me) are afraid to ask a teacher not because they are afraid it will sound stupid but because they don’t know how to ask it. They are so used to texting there questions or emailing or posting on these kinds of websites that they don’t know how to ask face to face. This website has helped me personally learn a lot in math and all my other courses. I also go online and help other kids too. There are always people online…normally over 100 people in each subject helping kids or asking questions. please check out the site and spread the word to the kids in your class because this is VERY helpful! When you send home those worksheets I used to always have a question at home while I was doing it and now with this website they can get help without cheating. They can learn without getting the answers spoon-fed to them. Anyway I thought you might like it…if you get a chance look it up and see what it’s all about” And with that, we close. I hope that this email will help you reconsider your decision about OpenStudy. Signed, poopsiedoodle, AriPotta, SnuggieLad, all contributors to the OpenStudy community P.S. Please contact us with anything we can do and any corrections we can make in order to see our dream become reality; to make the world one big study group. And please tell us if you have any suggestions as to how we can fix the mistakes students have made so that OpenStudy can be to your liking. We are all ears

4. SnuggieLad

@Callisto @KonradZuse @Preetha @poopsiedoodle @TuringTest @karatechopper

5. ParthKohli

I don't know how to react to this. I kind of agree with FLVS. The students here are not actually learning. But this is just a problem with our users who don't understand the consequences.

6. SnuggieLad

some of us are! openStudy is a valubal recourse to us and we dont want to lose it. Florida virual only sees the kids who are misusing it not the kids who are using it to seek help when they dont understand

7. ParthKohli

We called the CA staff to moderate. Similarly, we need their staff to know what questions are from FLVS.

8. Callisto

I understand your concern over this issue, so do we. But it would be wise of you to stop writing these email for now. While you are claiming that you just express your view over this issue as a member of OS, your wording sounds as if you are representing OS. Please be calm, think twice before you take any actions. Also, give admins some time to handle it.

9. TuringTest

Remember that ambassadors are not here to do more than greet new users and show them the ropes.

10. KonradZuse

The problem is, they aren't meeting us at all, nor do they really care IMO. Cheating is cheating, they don't care if you're playing nice, it's just those who cheat. AS callisto said, and I said last night, this isn't your place to post this. You say you're an ambassador, so what does that mean to them? That we are letting students moderate a website used for cheating? This is the place FOR ADMINS, not for AMBIES, USERS< or MODS IMO. Again this has been posted so many times, and yeah this is a collective post for everything, but still this is an admin situation.

11. SnuggieLad

then were are the admins...all tries to contact them and nobody gets a responce...this is something showing our own concern...your correct the wording may be off but that doesnt take away the point...a agree with you all and i understand your points...please understand ours...this is somthing seperate from openstudy...notice we didnt have any people outside of FLVS students assist in writing...this if from us to them...our responce of that...we are not speaking for the website but we are speaking for flvs members...thank you for your concern for us it really means a lot we will make it clear that this email is not from the site but students

12. ParthKohli

Correct, this is only related to the administrators and the people who are cheating. We members must only spot the cheaters. That's it.

13. poopsiedoodle

One other thing, noticed on the front page today that FLVS is partnered with Connections Academy. So, I think this applies to Connections students too.

14. SnuggieLad

we are not overstepping our bounds as individuals...and members...we truely get help from this site...much needed help...not cheating ...not answers...but help in understanding the subjects when we cant get ahold of the teachers

15. SnuggieLad

Connections Academy is also trying to stop the use of openstudy

16. ParthKohli

You are not. But before that, please the admins decide what they want to do. They might send this email from their side... which'd be much more representative.

17. SnuggieLad

I was in charge of writing...nothing else...

18. Callisto

Please do not try to make it more complicated. Writing all these emails may put you in disadvantage and worsen the case.

19. SnuggieLad

if the admins dont see it fit they can ban me but i will be able to say i stood up for a site i truely believe in the mission of...i dont care if they ban me...i will still be proud to say i tried to help other students...

20. SnuggieLad

we are not rebelling against FLVS or trying to speak for the whole site but if anything goes wrong my butt is on the line...not yours...

21. EvonHowell

Ok, i agree with the Mods, this is why on the other Posts i saw and replied too I said you guys need to contact the Mods and have them deal with it it wasn't your place at all to send that all you are doing is makeing the case worse. Well, you didn't help other Student in the Right way. Mods in my expert opinion if he is not removed people are going to get banned and alot are Ambassadors GOOD ambassadors this is what I think but it is up too you. Ambassador EvonHowell

22. SnuggieLad

you will not get banned...i wont get banned either...i am expressing concern which is in the constitution...i hate to play that card but now its on the table...you neither any of the other mods have to be in the line of fire...NOTHING WILL HAPPEN! its alright...it was simply an email from flvs students on openstudy...not anything more...you dont have to like the idea...its not up to you...its us that want our voice to be heard..and we simply wanted to let you know so we werent doing it without others knowladge

23. poopsiedoodle

If there are bad consequences, the three of us will be to blame. No one else. Nothing will happen to any of you guys.

24. poopsiedoodle

Pardon me while I post Preetha's reply to my post where I said that I sent the email.

25. ParthKohli

The three of you will be blamed, and the reputation of 100,000 will be at stake. :-\

26. samtasticc

Perhaps OS needs to rethink how it appears to the general public. Kids come sign up to OS thinking they will get answers to their test questions. Perhaps OS needs to make a sweep of members that are using the site for cheating, I've been asked multiple times by users to write essays for them, give them answers to tests, etc. I've always seen OS as a tutoring site, not as a site for answers. Maybe we need to express that a bit more, tutoring not cheating? I dunno.

27. samtasticc

You need to make it clear to FLVS that OS is meant to help, not to give answers.

28. poopsiedoodle

Here you go. VVVVV

29. samtasticc

^ Herp.

30. ParthKohli

Are you sure that is not sarcasm?

31. EvonHowell

I think it sarcasm

32. TuringTest

It's not an enthusiastic endorsement, that's for sure. I think we should ask her for clarification on how to proceed on matters like this in the future.

33. poopsiedoodle

Well, she said nothing negative about it. That's good enough for me. Again, the email was already sent, followed by one to clarify that we are just students.

34. poopsiedoodle

It was sent before SnuggieLad made this post.

35. ParthKohli

I don't see her saying, "Yes! You can email it!" anywhere either. So I'd go with @TuringTest on this one. :-)

36. poopsiedoodle

And there she is now. She can state her position.

37. poopsiedoodle

holy poo this is going to be a long one.

38. Preetha

Folks, we do not condone cheating and plagiarism on the site. We support schools like FLVS and CA in their quest to eliminate such activities. We are also supportive of Openstudiers who come here to use the site as intended - to give help and get help - regardless of where they came from. So that is my position. If you, FLVS/OpenStudiers, want to represent your position, and maintain that you are ad will be ethical users of the site, you are within your right to represent your position to your school. You need a place where you can ask for help. And always be polite, respectful and make your point courteously.

39. SnuggieLad

do you think the letter is respectfull?

40. SWAG

Case Closed.

41. EvonHowell

This case is closed plaese CLOSE this Question ASAP

42. dumbsearch2

I hope nothing will happen to this account for saying this, but I really don't understand why they are pratically yelling at @SnuggieLad and @poopsiedoodle for writing a simple letter!! I would be glad if everyone on OpenStudy would be this caring and cooperative. I find it degrading when the mods say that the ambys have no powere and to practically forget them, and that their mod privileges allow them to help. I believe that in an ideal community, everyone has a say. I find it strange that most of the mods don't even ask the ambies for any of their help (as far as I know). I also agree with @preetha's stance on this, however, and it's interesting that she didn't explicitly say that the ambies had no say. I do believe that @SnuggieLad and @poopsiedoodle should have at least asked the admins/mods beforehand, before sending it, though comments like this make me feel worthless. "This is the place FOR ADMINS, not for AMBIES, USERS< or MODS IMO." What's the point of trying to work up towards an amby ? "Remember that ambassadors are not here to do more than greet new users." Just my 2-cents. Alas, I always wish that it *was* two-cents, it always seems to fall into something even lower then that. ;)

43. dumbsearch2

Also, regarding their initial message, just want to let you know that by picking up "The Cheating Project", there are many ways to detect actions in your browser history programmatically. So don't rebel against there rules!! Until something is worked out, and they explicitly allow such actions.

44. ParthKohli

The thing meant by that comment was that this is not a democracy! This issue is about the site, not you. Users should work on reduction of cheating as far as possible. If you are letting the site down, just leave it and let the admins work on it. You should avoid losing your trust. Instead of sending them an email that practically would do nothing, you can prove that they are wrong. Where were you guys when they were cheating?

45. ParthKohli

That comment might have come out a little better, but I hope you get my point. :-)

46. dumbsearch2

I'm not on this site 24/7, but is anyone ? I try my best!

47. dumbsearch2

Very interesting to see @preetha's response: "So that is my position. If you, FLVS/OpenStudiers, want to represent your position, and maintain that you are ad will be ethical users of the site, you are within your right to represent your position to your school. You need a place where you can ask for help. And always be polite, respectful and make your point courteously. "

48. Callisto

"when the mods say that the ambys have no powere and to practically forget them, and that their mod privileges allow them to help." Don't get us wrong. Ambies don't have power to represent the whole OS community, neither do mods. The ball is in admins' court.

49. dumbsearch2

I do agree, however, that this should have been clarified... By being signed "all contributors to the OpenStudy community", it makes it appear that the mods/admins had a part of the letter. I think it should have been more clear who they were representing, the regular user, or an amby.

50. EvonHowell

Amby's are worth something Trust me we may not have power to ban someone but yet at the same time we do if we find someone cheating We call a Mod ASAP or if they are being disrespectful we tell them to pipe down and if they don't we call for a Mod well that's at least me! Us amby's we can have people suspended.

51. SnuggieLad

guys...drop it...i am talking with preetha and everything is ok...she is up to date agrees with it and thanks us for our help...question is closed.... thank you @Preetha @dumbsearch2 and thank you for your comments @Callisto @ParthKohli @TuringTest @EvonHowell your opinions have not gone unoticed to me and everyone else and i thank you for them

52. TuringTest

My position on ambys came from my earlier suggestion to actually give ambys more power, when I was corrected by admin that this was not their job; that they had a very explicit job description which was as welcomers. @preetha I must admit that I am surprised that you do not express concern about this email representing the site, and who that job should belong to, as I and others are saying. May I ask your stance on others sending letters like this in the future?

53. ParthKohli

I think the ambassadors were hired $$\mathbf{only}$$ for welcoming users.

54. EvonHowell

We were also hired to watch the site basically and to report users who are not obeying OpenStudy COC.

55. dumbsearch2

Honestly, from my first post in this thread: "I would be glad if everyone on OpenStudy would be this caring and cooperative." I do believe that it's fine for the user to talk about his opinion, and sign with a few users, but representing the site is a bit much... Though I wished you wouldn't yell at these users for their attempts to being cooperative. I find it very pleasing that they took all the time they took to write this letter, to help the community, and getting mad at this action, which was very well-mean't makes me a little sad inside. In an ideal community, everyone has a say. Just my two-cents

56. Preetha

Folks: Today: Ambis represent the site. Welcoming new comers and help them have a good first experience. And are nice, helpful and help newbs find the Code of Conduct. Mods: are selected for expertise in a subject and for superior maturity and ability to enforce the Code of Conduct wisely and courteously. Two different programs. Different intent and different powers/responsibilities etc.

57. amistre64

.... and then there was me :)

58. Preetha

You were the first and a leading light Amistre! We love you.

59. EvonHowell

Preetha CEO, OpenStudy

60. ParthKohli

I actually think that the 1-9 are the roles of each and every user.

61. dumbsearch2

Yes, as stated before, being an amby is just a state of mind.

62. dumbsearch2

It signifies that you are particularly good at those stuff ;)

63. ParthKohli

And the state of having a little logo along with your name. :-)

64. amistre64

awww ... thnx :) FLVS rules and regulations are FLVS concerns. I agree with the FLVS ruling. This site is not a secure enough environment to prevent users from cheating. And trying to police this site for FLVS users is not in the scope of the school to perform. The FLVS users should ask for clarification in the ban of Openstudy. Is it that they cannot, in any means, seek for guidance to study their material? Or, is it that they cannot come on the site whatsoever.

65. ParthKohli

It's interesting to see how users will be able to get banned.

66. EvonHowell

Hey, who knows it may be more cause one day you may receive an email saying Congrats you have been promoted to a Moderator.

67. dumbsearch2

I *still* hold true to what I have written previously: "Honestly, from my first post in this thread: "I would be glad if everyone on OpenStudy would be this caring and cooperative." I do believe that it's fine for the user to talk about his opinion, and sign with a few users, but representing the site is a bit much... Though I wished you wouldn't yell at these users for their attempts to being cooperative. I find it very pleasing that they took all the time they took to write this letter, to help the community, and getting mad at this action, which was very well-mean't makes me a little sad inside. In an ideal community, everyone has a say. Just my two-cents"

68. EvonHowell

Ok, the Case is closed Please go away from this question and lets get on with our day.

69. EvonHowell

Please?

70. poopsiedoodle

juslarify, when I said "all contributors to the OpenStudy community", I meant that all three of us were contributors, not that the whole community signed it.

71. poopsiedoodle

just to clarify* I have no idea what my keyboard is doing.

72. dumbsearch2

Well, I love your mission, what you tried to do to help OpenStudy, and I find nothing wrong with it. Now what I *do* find wrong is that you didn't clarify that in the first place!! ;) I still think that the mods shouldn't have barked at you guys for such an innocent thing! It was obviously mean't well, and you took a long time writing it! Very sad they get mad at you, you were trying to be a good contributor to the community. Sad they don't encourage this! I wish more users would be like you guys!! I think in an ideal community, everyone has some say.

73. dumbsearch2

You were so devote to the community! to do this! And they don't like it ?? I really like how the CEO, @preetha delt with it. It made a lot of sense.

74. SnuggieLad

dumbsearch...just drop it lol...its over...our mission is underway...we will bring this back up when its time lol

75. SnuggieLad

thanks though

76. EvonHowell

It doesn't need to be brought back up at all honestly!

77. SnuggieLad

evon...again not your place...i opened this....drop it...i will keep everyone up to date on its either success of utter failure...so till then drop it and keep this question hidden

78. dumbsearch2

IDK! I just find this important: I believe that in an ideal community, everyone can make a difference. It makes me gladdened to see users like this. Even in America, none of us are the President (except the president ;P), but we can make small differences...

79. SnuggieLad

ok...but lets drop it..

80. poopsiedoodle

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand still no reply. Come on lady. ANSWER ME >:l

81. EvonHowell

Guys there need not be a reply to this untill further info is released. PLZ

82. KonradZuse

Dumb, the problem you seem to not understand is that by him sending an email he can get expelled, as well as other students. I'm pretty sure you would not be happy if that were the case. We aren't "mad" at him, we just believe this is better suited to someone else. I think it was "the right thing" to do to express their concerns about using the site, another issue is that "ambassador" title was brought into the mix. It's okay that he expresses concern about his school, I would have done the same thing, but saying he is a representer of openstudy was not a good idea. They have no idea what the title means, you could be the chief answer sharing master for all they know. Again, drop it dumb, everyone has different opinions on the matter, you've stated yours at least 5x in this thread.

83. poopsiedoodle

@KonradZuse I also said: "As an ambassador on OpenStudy (I am poopsiedoodle, http://openstudy.com/users/poopsiedoodle), it is my job to enforce the Code of Conduct on OpenStudy. So our advice is to be nice and honest.”

84. KonradZuse

Again, going to point to what i said above.... Poopsie, I'm not mad at you, no one is, we just hope this turns out well for you FLVS students.

85. poopsiedoodle

Well, I said that I enforce the CoC, and then shared the part of the CoC where it states that just giving answers is against the rules.

86. matlee

Wow

87. chosenmatt

one year ago...

88. matlee

lol yeah im in flvs too

89. matlee

how did u find this post

90. chosenmatt

92. poopsiedoodle

93. matlee

OOH SHOOT yessss i love history hi poopsie

94. matlee

do any of these mods still go on

95. poopsiedoodle

@amistre64 does, @preetha does (of course), not sure about the other 3

96. Preetha

Well some of them do.

97. Blonde_Superman

I am enrolled in Spanish 2 on FLVS and i can personally say that I don't use OS for cheating reasons, i use it when i genuinely don't understand something. I mean, our virtual teachers can explain things to us very well over the phone or in an email, so for me OS is a lifesaver. OS is the only reason i am passing Spanish 2, if FLVS members are banned, or if the site is banned in its whole, many people- including myself- will near fail our classes. For those of you that don't know, teaching yourself a foreign language isn't the easiest thing to do.
