- Directrix

If a line is parallel to one side of a triangle and intersects the other two, then it divides them proportionally.
So, x is to (x + 5) as (x - 2) is to (x + 1)
x/(x+5) = (x-2)/(x+1)
Cross multiply and solve for x.

- anonymous

@Directrix helps me alot. He is really good. He knows how to explain it right and help you. :)

- anonymous

okay I know how to cross multiply but i dont think im gonna do that right... and thanks @k3nzi14

- Directrix

Go ahead and crank it out. Post your work here and we will check. Be brave.

- anonymous

Your welcome, Even though i couldn't help much.:/

- anonymous

- Directrix

@k3nzi14 You can always check the algebra.

- anonymous

huh?

- anonymous

oht that wasnt to me haha

- Directrix

x/(x+5) = (x-2)/(x+1)
x(x+1) = (x+5)(x-2)

so thats what I got so far

- anonymous

@Directrix

- anonymous

@Directrix true. but i just haven't learned that subject yet. .. and @UmmmHELP cross multiply the x+1 with the x.. and then cross multiply the x+5 with the x-2

- anonymous

thats what im trying to say im not understanding

- anonymous

I know it seems simple but ugh still lost...

- Directrix

I know you can multiply these:
x(x+1) = (x+5)(x-2)
Do the left side and then do the right side.

- anonymous

okay well x+5 is just 5x isnt it? like no im not trying to play dumb or anything I honestly 100% dont know what to do this is really confusing to me

- anonymous

and im running out of time to finish it so im really frustrated which doesn't help at all

- anonymous

yes its 5x and then there is -2x

- anonymous

right @Directrix ?

- anonymous

okay guys seriously Im running out of time and no I dont want the answers and I know im not understanding this even though your explaining but could someone please try and explain it some more or a different way!?

- Directrix
