The Zenger case of the early 1700s basically built the foundation for the freedom of speech in the press and is monumental in the success of America, and the institution of democracy. In many cases, journalism was important in establishing America's split from England, because people in secret societies communicated their ideas to large audiences. Basically, the freedom of the press is ESSENTIAL to democracy and really important to America. :)
