## hartnn 2 years ago This is in continuation with Preetha ma'am question, 'Showcase your good work' http://openstudy.com/users/preetha#/updates/512b7e1be4b098bb5fbaecd3 @all Ambassados, keep flowing in "good examples for new ambassadors" and as Preetha ma'am said, we will all celebrate them together.

1. hartnn

@BostonBlue want to add something ?

2. ParthKohli

Guru ji!

3. Preetha

Thanks Hartn. This is going to be very helpful.

4. hartnn

this is a call out to experienced ambassadors asking them to post links to good exchanges to help the new ambi's get the idea , like the one AravindG posted, http://openstudy.com/updates/515c19d8e4b0507ceba361de here are few others from me, http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/51402910e4b0f08cbdc8d512 http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/5144597fe4b04cdfc5821e6b

5. AravindG

greeting new users on chat :

6. hartnn

i suggest you all keep this link as handy to give them to new users. http://prezi.com/fs3hqdpcopic/an-unofficial-guide-to-openstudy/

7. hartnn

8. BostonBlue

thanks @hartnn !! it's great that you connected it back to preetha's question from a few weeks ago, so we won't lose what people posted there.

9. AravindG

ok this one also :)

10. BostonBlue

New ambassadors, don't miss this very valuable showcase of ambassador work! :) @pooja195 @ Joannaxox3 @dmezzullo @ryan123345 @Carniel @tafkas77 @SnuggieLad

11. dmezzullo

So it is ok if we go to new users posts and welcome em if we don't know how to do their problem? i have been wondering this for a little while now @BostonBlue

12. dmezzullo

@joannaxox3

13. BostonBlue

this is a good question! what do you experienced ambassadors do? it's obviously ideal if you can answer their question. . . but i've seen examples where someone else was answering the question and an ambi jumped in and posted a welcome. i guess we wouldn't want to just welcome them without anyone answering the question and leave them hanging. we want their first experience to be welcoming but also that they get their question answered. those are my thoughts. other folks?

14. dmezzullo

So if someone is answering the question like one of the smart 99's or something then would it be alright to welcome em?

15. hartnn

if anyone is already answering, WAIT till the explanation finishes entirely, then you can jump in and welcome. you can welcome new users even if you couldn't answer them. i would say something like this, ' @... Hi, $$\Huge \mathcal{\text{Welcome To OpenStudy}\ddot\smile}$$ While you wait to get help from other OS users, which you will get pretty soon, you can browse various features of this site, If you need any help browsing , you can ask (or message) me (or any other ambassador with a purple encircled A before their name.) Hope you have great learning experience with learning on OpenStudy. ' these are just my thoughts, anyone else welcome to add /share their own.

16. ryan123345

I actually have one :) @hartnn ill share it to you in a little bit when my laptop turns on.

17. BostonBlue

this is great to have actual examples of welcome messages! the more the better! it really helps everyone, not just the new people, because we can all be helped by good ideas! one thing i noticed is that most people, in their welcome, refer new folks to the CoC - (usually just a mention and link at the end, which is good. we don't want it to look like we assume they're people who would cheat!) i like when people explain about the A's a @hartnn did above, because it may be obvious to us, but it isn't to new people.

18. BostonBlue

or might not be obvious to new people. . .

19. dmezzullo

@BostonBlue Could u plz step in Math chat since they do not wanna listen to me

20. EvonHowell

My Welcome msg is actually Pretty Long but I think it work's :)

21. hartnn

For all ambassadors, here are some $$\mathbb Latex$$ templates, you can find more in Latex Praticing group $$\huge \color{red}{\text{Welcome to Open Study}}\ddot\smile$$ $\boxed{\boxed{\Large{\stackrel{\color{red}{\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star}}{\mathscr {\color{orange}{Welcome } \quad \color{green}{To}\quad \color{purple}{OpenStudy }!!}}}\\{\color{pink}{\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star\qquad\ast\qquad\star}}}}$ $\begin{array}l \large \mathcal {\color{red}{\text{W}}\color{orange}{\text{e}}\color{#e6e600}{\text{l}}\color{green}{\text{c}}\color{blue}{\text{o}}\color{purple}{\text{m}}\color{purple}{\text{e}}\color{red}{\text{ }}\color{orange}{\text{t}}\color{#e6e600}{\text{o}}\color{green}{\text{ }}\color{blue}{\text{O}}\color{purple}{\text{p}}\color{purple}{\text{e}}\color{red}{\text{n}}\color{orange}{\text{ }}\color{#e6e600}{\text{S}}\color{green}{\text{t}}\color{blue}{\text{u}}\color{purple}{\text{d}}\color{purple}{\text{y!}}\color{red}{\text{}}\color{orange}{\text{! :}}\color{#e6e600}{\text{)}}\color{green}{\text{}}}\end{array}$ To use them, just right click on them, Show Math As -> Tex Commands Copy the code that opens in separate window and paste in in reply between these brackets , $$...$$ or $..*paste here*..$ tip : Don't be too fancy, more the latex, more time it takes to load the page.

22. ParthKohli

One doesn't even need any $$\LaTeX$$.

23. AravindG

I agree ^

24. mathslover

$$\begin{array}{} \cal{\large{\text{Hey! Good to see you on this site!}}}\\ \\ {\huge \mathtt{\color{blue}{\text{Welcome To OpenStudy!}}}} \\ \text{enjoy answering and asking questions here}\\ \cal{\large{\text{Tips:)}}} \\ \textbf{Ambassadors (people with A next to their name) are here to help you.}\\ \textbf{If you have any questions about the site, feel free to ask us!}\\ \textbf{Users who appear in Purple are Moderators and help run the site.}\\ \textbf{If you have a serious issue with the site or with the behavior of other}\\ \textbf{users}\\ \textbf{please feel free to raise it with them.}\\ \textbf{Want to study a particular subject? Click 'Find More Subjects'}\\ \textbf{search for it there.}\\ \textbf{If you get a good response from a user , click on best response}\\ \end{array}$$ What do you think about the above format guys?

25. hartnn

I think thats way too much LATEX, there is no need to write statements in LATEX, just one welcome using LATEX is much more than enough (even thats not required, but since it looks good, its worth it.) Remember, more the LATEX part , more time it will take to load the page, imagine what that comment of yours will do to a slow connection. Also, there are too much unnecessary details for day 1 user. Telling about ambies is ok, instead of telling about mods and find more subjects and medals(they might not want to know many things at once) , you can tell them about CoC. Keep it short and sweet .

26. ParthKohli

I was speaking in Chinese during the meeting. :-P

27. dmezzullo

lololol^

28. mathslover

Ok! I think just linking them to openstudy code of conduct and welcoming to this site is enough. Thanks Hartnn for your views! Haha Parth :)

29. BostonBlue

i agree that it should be short and sweet - a welcome, telling them how ambassadors are there to help, mentioning code of conduct and link to it, letting them know how they can message you if they have a question. anyone who has anything much longer should take a look at some of the examples here, along with the discussion - and think about editing their message to be shorter.

31. HAPPY10

i hope i really become a ambassador

32. mathslover

@HAPPY10 That's great. Try to help students as much as you can. Welcome new users nicely and of course , follow the OpenStudy code-of-conduct. If you follow some of these guidelines then there are surely some chances for you to become an ambassador. Oh! But don't forget to let us know how you helped and welcomed new users! Put the links in your profile page. Best of Luck!

33. HAPPY10

how?

34. mathslover

At the top of your page there is written "Settings" , click on that. Or go here : http://openstudy.com/settings You will see your profile settings at first, in the "About me " section, post links of the questions for which you think you helped the new users nicely. Verify it : At the top of your page you can see "HAPPY10" written . Click on that and you will be directed to the following page : http://openstudy.com/users/happy10 Check out your profile page there.

35. HAPPY10

thanks:)

36. HAPPY10

what will i see mathslover?

37. mathslover

You will see your profile page if you click on "HAPPY10" or : http://openstudy.com/users/happy10

38. HAPPY10

ok yesterday i regerster a form for being an ambassador but i didnt get nothing back from it.

39. HAPPY10

bostonblue how did you come an ambassador?

40. BostonBlue

hi @happy10. (see how i put the @ in front of your name? that's a good thing to do when you ask a question of someone or reference them, bc/then they get a notification (under the little flag in the top left corner) and then they're alerted to the fact that you've asked them something.) i just happened to see this, but i might not have. anyway, i work for OpenStudy, i am Director of Community Engagement, so i do a lot of work with the Ambassador Program. @mathslover is giving you good advice. i see that you've sent in your application through the form. you might also want to go back to the original instructions at: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/51475607e4b04cdfc5830ef7 (it's on the right in yellow) which explain the other things that you have to send in (and where to send them) in order to be considered as an ambassador.

41. AravindG

42. HAPPY10

thanks @AravindG

43. AravindG

yw :)

44. BostonBlue

me saying thanks as well!

45. hartnn

this also shows that we should guide the asker to required answer by giving them directions on what/how to solve, and should not provide entire solutions/direct answers http://openstudy.com/users/hartnn#/updates/517b9356e4b0be6b54aace5f

46. BostonBlue

that's a great example!! thanks for posting it!

47. andriod09

First time I managed to grab a screenie of it! Here you go. Hope I'll have a chance to attend the meeting this month, I may not be able to, but we'll see, won't we?

52. Compassionate

I don't have to submit mine until the star June 1st because I became an Ambassador in March, correct?

53. JA1
54. JA1

Okay let me explain the context here, a user post an irrelavent post and when @uri goes in to explain to them NICELY they go ahead and start to cuss and insult her, when I came in the same thing happened to me, I asked nicely, too nicely I think and after a while no mods came so I PM'ed the user, here is the PM's: http://tinypic.com/r/k9dh7m/5 http://oi44.tinypic.com/fuba5t.jpg The first one is her responses, the second one are mine.

55. MathLegend

I welcome people using PMs.

56. thomaster

I always use one of my $$\LaTeX$$ welcoming messages and answer the question after that. I posted many of these latex codes here: $$\bf\large\color{blue}{(\underline{\href{/study#/updates/51b10358e4b05b167ed2f45e}{link}})}$$ When users make (minor) mistakes or exhibit bad behavior, i usualy emphrasize the CoC and/or tell them they can ask ambassadors for help when they're having difficulties using the site. $$\large\sf Examples:$$ http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/51c1d81ae4b0bb0a43603b41 http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/51c0dcb5e4b0a49e8c8f8b87 $$\large\sf Might\ be\ useful:$$ $$\to$$ Latex link to the CoC: $$\bf\href{/code-of-conduct}{\color{red}{Code~of~Conduct}}$$ $$\bf\href{/code-of-conduct}{\color{red}{Code~of~Conduct}}$$ $$\to$$ Latex referral to another section: $$\large\sf \color{blue}{\underline{\href{ /study#/groups/mathematics}{Mathematics}}}$$ $$\large\sf \color{blue}{\underline{\href{ /study#/groups/mathematics}{Mathematics}}}$$ (alter /study#/groups/mathematics to refer to a different section, let's say for design it would be /study#/groups/design.
