Summarize the causes and effects of the arms race and proxy wars in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Use the table below to answer the following question. United States Military Deaths by Country of Casualty Country of Casualty Number of Records Cambodia 520 Laos 733 North Vietnam 1,124 Communist China 10 Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) 55,629 Thailand 177 Total 58,193 Source: http://www.archives.gov/research/military/vietnam-war/casualty-statistics.html#country What can be inferred from this chart? Most of the fighting in the Vietnam War took place in South Vietnam. The Vietnam War resulted in large numbers of civilian casualties. The majority of the casualties in North Vietnam were not American soldiers. Military deaths in Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand were under-reported. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 2 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Which of the following was not an effect of proxy wars? an arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union the rise of democracies in most of Latin America a politically united Vietnam a politically divided Korean peninsula -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 3 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Proxy wars were primarily a product of American attempts to gain colonies the Soviet policy of the domino theory Soviet attempts to engage in a war with the U.S. the American policy of containment -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 4 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Which cause and effect relationship is correctly matched? communists rule North Korean—China and the Soviet Union back North Korea Fidel Castro assumes power in Cuba—the U.S. backs the Castro regime the mujahedeen rise in Afghanistan—the Soviets back the mujahedeen the Sandinistas take power in Nicaragua—the U.S. backs the Sandinistas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 5 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) The Soviets' exit from Afghanistan led to a sweeping victory for democracy series of unstable governments Soviet-style dictatorship U.S.-backed Muslim theocracy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 6 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Why was the Bay of Pigs an embarrassment for the United States? It showed that Havana had surveillance in Washington. The American invasion plot was a total failure. Kennedy did not understand cultural differences in Cuba. Florida could not stop the arrival of thousands of Cubans. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 7 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Why are the wars in Vietnam and Korea better remembered in the United States than other proxy wars? because the United States lost these wars because the United States won these wars because many Americans died in these wars because these were the longest proxy wars -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Question 8 (Multiple Choice Worth 5 points) Use the graph below showing the cost of wars in the 20th century to answer the following question. This is a line graph showing the cost of wars in the 20th century. It shows WWI cost 20 billion dollars, WWII cost 296 billion dollars, Korea cost 30 billion dollars, Vietnam cost 111 dollars, and the Persian Gulf War cost 61 billion dollars. © 2012 FLVS Which is the best explanation for why the Cold War is not included in this chart? Since the Cold War didn't involve fighting, there was no money budgeted or lost in fighting the Cold War. Because the Cold War is just another name for the Vietnam War, that cost is included in the graph. The Cold War was not a conventional war, and its costs are measured by the individual proxy wars. It is included in the costs of World War II as part of the global post-war recovery.

Why was the Bay of Pigs an embarrassment for the United States? It's NOT! "It showed that Havana had surveillance in Washington."
anonymous
  • anonymous
" sweeping victory for democracy " is not correct.
anonymous
  • anonymous
"Fidel Castro assumes power in Cuba—the U.S. backs the Castro regime" is wrong.
anonymous
  • anonymous
omg @joannaxox3 Really? -_- Everyone know that the only reason people go on Openstudy is to get answers for home work and quizzes. micheal here was just stupid enough to put "Worth 5 Points:"
