as far as Lucas goes, id say he is not happy with his current social status and is looking for ways to "define" himself. but thats just a guess

but competence/inferority sounds plausible as well trust is a baby issue autonomy is an infant stage identity has to do with finding your niche in life, teens and such competency has to do with doing something and doing it to the best of your abilities; adults tend to strive for this.
