so you're solving for x...put the equation like this.|dw:1370119044149:dw|

  • anonymous
work on isolating the x.. so first fix the part in the parentheses and you get this |dw:1370119087170:dw|

but did u see what i did there? :)

alright and then what do I do with 8x-(5x+4)?
anonymous
  • anonymous
i just showed u... ^^^^ you're pretty much multiplying like this -1(5x+4) and distributive property gets you this: 8x - 5x -4 :)

@Jhannybean it shouldn't be 8x−5x+4−4≥−31−4... it should be 8x−5x-4−4≥−31−4

@jaderbrown what do you get when you add 4 to both sides? :)
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
\[8x-(5x+4) \ge -31\]isolate x's on one side \[8x - 5x -4+4\ge -31 +4\]\[8x - 5x \ge -27\]\[3x \ge -27\] now divide by 3 and solve for x You will have your answer.

  • Jhannybean
and thanks @iheartfood i forgot to distribute the negative.
anonymous
  • anonymous
-35 then divide by 3 which is -11.66666666
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
no no, @jaderbrown it's -31 + 4 not -31 - 4
anonymous
  • anonymous
okay so -27 divided by 3 is-9
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
yep
anonymous
  • anonymous
x is less than or equal to -9
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
greater than or =

you don't flip the sign if you don't change -9 to a positive
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
so since x is bigger than -9, the "alligator" wants to eat the x instead of the 9. for the second one, the alligator wants to eat the -9 instead of the x, and -9 is less than or = x.

  • Jhannybean
i was just telling you the difference between greater than or equal to, or less than or equal to.
anonymous
  • anonymous
yes you do... but you want x to be positive. now, if it were this: -x≥9 then you'd switch because thats just a rule.. so x≤-9 do you understand?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yeah I understand
Jhannybean
  • Jhannybean
cool.
