87.653 as mixed number ?
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
A mixed number is a number that has a whole number part and a fraction part. In your number 87.653 ; 87 is your whole number and .653 contributes to the fraction part. So keep 87 as it is. How can you write .653 as a fraction ( Meaning something over something)?
anonymous
  • anonymous
well i have to write it as a mixed number ?
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
I know. did you read my first line that explains what a mixed number is?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yeahh i read it ... but i dont really know how to write it
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
A mixed number looks something like this \[3\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\] 3 is the whole part and 1/2 is the fraction part
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
the 1/2 in the above number I can express it as a decimal number. 1/2 is actually 0.5 So 3 1/2 is actually 3.5. So did you see how the whole part in the decimal number and the mixed number are the same. And the part of the number after the decimal point is what becomes the fraction.

why such a lag in your response?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
Do you know the place value of the numbers after the decimal ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
okayy i kind of get it now ;o
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
@texaschic101 he has not even answered the previous question. He needs to understand that first b4 we go on to that. It will be better if one of us does this. If you want to do it go ahead. I don't mind.
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
so 87.653 we keep the 87 as it is and convert the .653 into a fraction
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
If it is on the left of the decimal, it is a whole number. If it is on the right of the decimal, then it is a fraction
rajee_sam
  • rajee_sam
@apple69 I guess @texaschic101 wants to do this, so follow her cue. Good luck
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
87 is the whole number. Now lets look at .653... the 6 is in the tenths place, the 5 is in the hundredths place, and the 3 is in the thousandths place. You go by the last number...3...in the thousandths place. Therefore, the fraction is 653/1000. So your answer is 87 653/1000

Hey Apple69...have a good lunch ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
@texaschic101 thanks i understand it a little better now .. do we always go by last number ? & i had a good lunch aha
anonymous
  • anonymous
@rajee_sam thanks for helping tho i appreciate it
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes...you go by the last number, and whatever place value it is in, then that will be the denominator of your fraction.
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
For instance.....what would 4.5 be as a mixed number ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
If it is on the left of the decimal, it is a whole number.
anonymous
  • anonymous
4 5/10 ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes...and it can be reduced to what ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
5 ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
no....it can be reduced to 4 1/2.....because 5/10 reduces to 1/2. Understand ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yess (: !! but what is 52 243/1000 as a decimal number ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
Do you know how to turn a mixed number into an improper fraction ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
show mw how
anonymous
  • anonymous
me*
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
ok.....52 243/1000 You take the whole number (52) and multiply it by the denominator (1000) and then add that total to the numerator (243). Once you get that total, you put it over the original denominator (1000). Can you do that ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
53,000 ?? ;o
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
no....52 x 1000 + 243, and then you put that number over 1000. Try again.
anonymous
  • anonymous
52,243 ? is the first part right :o
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes......now put it over 1000
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
52,243/1000....this is an improper fraction....when the numerator is bigger then the denominator. Now you just divide 52,243 by 1000 to get your decimal. Can you do that ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
52.243 ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes.....thats it. There is another way to do this.... 52 243/1000.....the 52 is the whole number...set it aside, and just divide 243 by 1000, which gives you .243.....now just put your whole number in front and it comes out to be 52.243. Either way you do it, you will get the same answer.
anonymous
  • anonymous
thankss !! (: .. wat about 79/100 ? do you just divide
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes....79 divided by 100 and you will get your decimal
anonymous
  • anonymous
i got decimal part now (: what about 98.809 as a mixed number
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
ok.....you know that 98 is the whole number. Now find the place value of the last number of the decimal which is what ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
do you need help ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
yeah i need help
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
the place value of numbers behind the decimal is not the same as in front of the decimal. It doesn't go : ones, tens, hundreds. It goes tenths, hundreds, thousandths. Look at your decimal part : .809....the 8 is in the tenths place, the 0 is in the hundredths place and the 9 is in the thousandths place. The last number 9 is what you go by. So your mixed number is 98 809/1000. Do you understand ?
anonymous
  • anonymous

texaschic101
  • texaschic101
first you need to turn it into a decimal by dividing. What do you get when you divide ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
0.7 ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
yes.....you can either multiply that by 100 or you can move the decimal two spaces to the right adding 0's if needed. That is how you turn a decimal into a percent.
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
So what did you get ?
anonymous
  • anonymous
70%
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
you got it. .7 = 70%
anonymous
  • anonymous
:) ! & if its 18/25 ? do you do the same ?
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
if your trying to turn it into a percent, then yes......you divide it and turn it into a decimal, and then multiply that by 100 to get your percent.
texaschic101
  • texaschic101
work it out and tell me what you get
anonymous
  • anonymous
okay let me work it out

texaschic101
  • texaschic101
72% is correct
