87.653 as mixed number ?

- rajee_sam

A mixed number is a number that has a whole number part and a fraction part.
In your number 87.653 ; 87 is your whole number and .653 contributes to the fraction part.
So keep 87 as it is. How can you write .653 as a fraction ( Meaning something over something)?

- anonymous

well i have to write it as a mixed number ?

- rajee_sam

I know. did you read my first line that explains what a mixed number is?

- anonymous

yeahh i read it ... but i dont really know how to write it

- rajee_sam

A mixed number looks something like this
\[3\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\] 3 is the whole part and 1/2 is the fraction part

- rajee_sam

the 1/2 in the above number I can express it as a decimal number. 1/2 is actually 0.5
So 3 1/2 is actually 3.5. So did you see how the whole part in the decimal number and the mixed number are the same. And the part of the number after the decimal point is what becomes the fraction.

- rajee_sam

@apple69

- rajee_sam

why such a lag in your response?

- texaschic101

Do you know the place value of the numbers after the decimal ?

- anonymous

okayy i kind of get it now ;o

- rajee_sam

@texaschic101 he has not even answered the previous question. He needs to understand that first b4 we go on to that. It will be better if one of us does this. If you want to do it go ahead. I don't mind.

- rajee_sam

so 87.653 we keep the 87 as it is and convert the .653 into a fraction

- texaschic101

If it is on the left of the decimal, it is a whole number. If it is on the right of the decimal, then it is a fraction

- rajee_sam

@apple69 I guess @texaschic101 wants to do this, so follow her cue. Good luck

- texaschic101

87 is the whole number. Now lets look at .653...
the 6 is in the tenths place, the 5 is in the hundredths place, and the 3 is in the thousandths place. You go by the last number...3...in the thousandths place. Therefore, the fraction is 653/1000. So your answer is 87 653/1000

- texaschic101

Hey Apple69...have a good lunch ?

- anonymous

@texaschic101 thanks i understand it a little better now .. do we always go by last number ? & i had a good lunch aha

- anonymous

@rajee_sam thanks for helping tho i appreciate it

- texaschic101

yes...you go by the last number, and whatever place value it is in, then that will be the denominator of your fraction.

- texaschic101

For instance.....what would 4.5 be as a mixed number ?

- texaschic101

If it is on the left of the decimal, it is a whole number.

- anonymous

4 5/10 ?

- texaschic101

yes...and it can be reduced to what ?

- anonymous

5 ?

- texaschic101

no....it can be reduced to 4 1/2.....because 5/10 reduces to 1/2.
Understand ?

- anonymous

yess (: !! but what is 52 243/1000 as a decimal number ?

- texaschic101

Do you know how to turn a mixed number into an improper fraction ?

- anonymous

show mw how

- anonymous

me*

- texaschic101

ok.....52 243/1000
You take the whole number (52) and multiply it by the denominator (1000) and then add that total to the numerator (243). Once you get that total, you put it over the original denominator (1000). Can you do that ?

- anonymous

53,000 ?? ;o

- texaschic101

no....52 x 1000 + 243, and then you put that number over 1000.
Try again.

- anonymous

52,243 ? is the first part right :o

- texaschic101

yes......now put it over 1000

- texaschic101

52,243/1000....this is an improper fraction....when the numerator is bigger then the denominator. Now you just divide 52,243 by 1000 to get your decimal.
Can you do that ?

- anonymous

52.243 ?

- texaschic101

yes.....thats it. There is another way to do this....
52 243/1000.....the 52 is the whole number...set it aside, and just divide 243 by 1000, which gives you .243.....now just put your whole number in front and it comes out to be 52.243. Either way you do it, you will get the same answer.

- anonymous

thankss !! (: .. wat about 79/100 ? do you just divide

- texaschic101

yes....79 divided by 100 and you will get your decimal

- anonymous

i got decimal part now (: what about 98.809 as a mixed number

- texaschic101

ok.....you know that 98 is the whole number. Now find the place value of the last number of the decimal which is what ?

- texaschic101

do you need help ?

- anonymous

yeah i need help

- texaschic101

the place value of numbers behind the decimal is not the same as in front of the decimal. It doesn't go : ones, tens, hundreds. It goes tenths, hundreds, thousandths. Look at your decimal part : .809....the 8 is in the tenths place, the 0 is in the hundredths place and the 9 is in the thousandths place. The last number 9 is what you go by. So your mixed number is 98 809/1000.
Do you understand ?

- anonymous

yeah i got it (: !! i have still have more to go /: i need to do laot of work today so i can graduate with my class of 2013 cause im missing these classes ;(

- texaschic101

- texaschic101

- anonymous

- texaschic101

- anonymous

yess how long can you help me ?

- texaschic101

I don't know....just list some questions

- anonymous

7/10 as a percent ?

- texaschic101

first you need to turn it into a decimal by dividing. What do you get when you divide ?

- anonymous

0.7 ?

- texaschic101

yes.....you can either multiply that by 100 or you can move the decimal two spaces to the right adding 0's if needed. That is how you turn a decimal into a percent.

- texaschic101

So what did you get ?

- anonymous

70%

- texaschic101

you got it. .7 = 70%

- anonymous

:) ! & if its 18/25 ? do you do the same ?

- texaschic101

if your trying to turn it into a percent, then yes......you divide it and turn it into a decimal, and then multiply that by 100 to get your percent.

- texaschic101

work it out and tell me what you get

- anonymous

okay let me work it out

- anonymous

72% ?

- texaschic101

If your trying to turn a decimal to a percent, multiply the decimal by 100.
If you trying to turn a percent into a decimal, divide the percent by 100.

- texaschic101

72% is correct

- anonymous

yess (: and is 8% as a decimal ? = 0.08 ?

- texaschic101

yes it is :)

- texaschic101

your catching on....good

- anonymous

cause your a good tutor aha (: & is 17% as a decimal = 0.17

- texaschic101

yes it is....see, your not dumb......I told you so

- texaschic101

can you turn 0.17 into a fraction ? Remember the place value.

- anonymous

your really good at helping (: ? & okayy do you still have time formore questions ;O ?

- texaschic101

yes....ask away

- texaschic101

can you answer the question I just asked you ?

- anonymous

- texaschic101

if you want to

- anonymous

do you have time ?

- texaschic101

I have time

- anonymous

find 82% of 70.

- texaschic101

ok......Here is something you are gonna need to remember..." of " in these problems as well as word problems, means multiply.
82% of 70 = 82% x 70.
First you will need to turn 82% into a decimal. Do you remember how to do that ?

- anonymous

0.82 ?

- texaschic101

yes....now multiply .82 x 70 and what do you get ?

- anonymous

57.4 ?

- texaschic101

yes...

- anonymous

:) !

- texaschic101

you are doing good :)

- anonymous

kyle is buying a new car. At Bank A, a car loan will cost him 11.5%. At bank B, it will cost 12.25%. if he borrows $8,000, how much will he save if he borrows from bank A ?
@texaschic101

- texaschic101

Bank A : (8000)(.115) = 920 -- this is the interest
8000 + 920 = 8,920 (this is what has to be paid back.
Bank B : (8000)(.1225) = 980 -- this is the interest
8000 + 980 = 8,980 (this is what has to be paid back.
8980 - 8920 = 60
ANSWER : Kyle will save $60 if he borrows from Bank A

- texaschic101
