I was recently inspired by this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-PnBZihCmk But although it is such a good concept OS cannot possibly fulfill the needs of so many people, OS needs to be redesigned and made to support more people, it needs to go mobile and it needs a better program for new users, the ambassadors are doing an outstanding job as it is, but we need more, this website has so much potential, just like Preetha said, If we have more users willing to teach than those they teach will teach it forward and we could end up with thousands of users, but the biggest problem is enticing

the users, how do we get passed helping a user and then the user leaves, we need to involve him in the community, now over at the ambassador group they are working hard to do this in June, and props to them but we need to take it further, if we have more users and those users then become teachers then they might make 5 new teachers who will make more teachers and so on but this will only happen if the user stays, some users stay by themselves but others don't,now I understand many of these issues are being addressed but I have a suggestion, we could hold a 1 hour meeting open to those willing to help in which we can discuss problems and resolve them, most importantly we need to have a large group of people working with us in this mission for the new OpenStudy, a small group will take too long to do this, but if we are together than nothing can stop us from making the new OpenStudy, what are your thoughts?

We're working on a mobile app, it's been posted in the Ambassador section. I agree on a few things such as the fact that if users need the help, they need to be online to receive that help. I'm not quite sure what you mean by 1 hour meeting or anything. Can you elaborate just a little bit more on what you're planning to improve on. Just to clear up the confusion, I may not be the only one confused. As I can see though, you have put a lot of thought into this and I hope that if these changes are made, that the site improves for the better.

Perhaps virtual room to help show the users how to do a problem step by step. Kind of like an adobe room. Maybe an adobe room for each subject that re open 24/7 and there is always someone in them to provide assistance to users in need of help. Does that make sense? What do you think @Preetha , anyone?

JA1
  • JA1
Well that would not be good, the idea of a collaborative learning environment is what we need but how do we get users to stay
JA1
  • JA1
We need to have a reason for them to feel committed to the website instead of asking for help and then leaving.
anonymous
  • anonymous
I think that with the collaboration of the adobe rooms, if we make it fun that the users will be intrigued and stay for help. I always liked to go to adobe rooms to gain help and assistance, I found it fun. Maybe other users will as well. As for getting them to stay after they've received that help perhaps maybe some interactive study games on the site?
JA1
  • JA1
nono The way OS is with the social interaction is good, and about adobe rooms what is that? Also what we need to do is make users get involved but how?
anonymous
  • anonymous
OS needs to go more viral, it needs to be further known to the world. Perhaps OS advertisements. Also it needs to be discussed more on social networking sites that are popular. Such as facebook, twitter, tumblr, instagram, any other social networking site that you can think of. I know there is a ask.fm and facebook for OS.
JA1
  • JA1
Yes and I addressed this but we cannot go viral unless we are prepared, we need more stability, better reception, more users that stay and such.

They're probably going to upgrade the site this summer. The time to go viral is after the summer vacation, like in september when all the schools start. I only hope that OS won't get so big that it becomes unmanageable. \(\Huge\ddot\smile\)

Thtas why we need preparation :)

I believe in quality over quantity. Ambassadors go through a slow selection to pick the best and most willing; brightest of the bunch. If we had 300 Ambassadors, with only a few really doing hard work, and the rest inactive or slacking, it'll be chaos. Not only that - it would be hard to maintain 300 Ambassadors! We'd need to make more administrators and moderators for such a task. With expansion of Ambassadors comes expansion of monitoring actions. We need little Ambassadors, but they need to be willing and dedicated to working. To maintaining their section and using teamwork or join-force. It is very important that all our Ambassadors work to their fullest potential. Like aforementioned, as the site grows we'll need more Ambassadors and staff, of course. The OpenStudy demographics continue to rise. That's why I feel it is so important that we retain members so they can take on the future task of OpenStudy Ambassador. More Ambassadors is not necessarily good and I feel strongly about my opinion.
JA1
  • JA1
Oh yes I agree 10000% about having too many ambassadors, and I do NOT want this, that would be mass producing with no quality, but we need to gain the attention of users so they stay,

dumbsearch2
  • dumbsearch2
Hehe. Anyways, 1. OpenStudy just needs more mods, the site's community is now filled with trolls... and enough of trolls being picked as ambassadors, I know a lot of ambassadors who have caused a lot of havoc, while representing the site: It needs to be more selective. And regarding getting new mods, we don't just need new mods, we need good ones, and that's why I'm very pleased with the new mods they have picked. Good work there. And I've noticed old-time moderators coming back to moderate. 2. The OpenStudy website is so laggy, and it needs a remake: both the desktop site and the mobile website. It's much too much dependent on AJAX and JavaScript. Enough of that nonsense. It needs to be ENTIRELY redone. And I'm so glad that OpenStudy is working now on mobile apps, but the website itself also needs improvement, and the mobile site crashed on slower devices due to the fact that it loads the whole desktop version, and then puts an extra mobile "skin" on it that actually has much less functionality. On the optimistic side, a lot of the issues mentioned on this post have already started to be fixed. And regarding getting people attached to the OpenStudy community and not just ask for help: the people asking for help will always outnumber the people actually helping and being loyal, but still I think the current ratio is pretty good. There's really nothing we can do to force people to help others without scaring them off. I, at the beginning of joining OpenStudy had no other interest but to ask for help, but if they had demanded be to help on OpenStudy I wouldn't have been so devote and impassioned with the site as I am now. Just my two cents, but alas, it always comes out to become less then that :)
JA1
  • JA1
Those "two cents" are worth 100 in my book, and you are absolutely right, we need more mods (THAT ARE GOOD) and forget about the mobile site, with an app we will have something even better, and then we can worry about that, also you are so right, this website is too reliant on certain things, it needs a new makeover, also if we had more ambassadors and if users made more friends with new people we could get users to come back :)

Mata - mata, listen. If you're having trouble or complains please take them somewhere else. I'm not trying to be rude, but a public post isn't really the best place to gossip about members and spread negativity. I was fine just going along with it and having fun with you guys, but I feel this has gotten out of hand. If it's reallya big issue then report it to a moderator. We really don't need this kind of language here. :)

Some comments without reading what others have tossed on the barbie so far... Many of the people I see ask a question and never come back, never close the question, etc. are not here for tutoring or groups study or anything like that. They want an answer for their homework or test and do not care how they get it. They ask, do not get gratification within minutes, leave and never come back. If these people were informed of the purpose of OpenStudy, through something like the introduction that was recently put on Prezi, http://prezi.com/fs3hqdpcopic/an-unofficial-guide-to-openstudy/ , you would have a better chance of drawing these people in. Give them more of a reason to come here than to get one answer and leave. Also, emphasis of the educational benefits of teaching can be added. When you teach others, you learn more deeply. It causes consolidation of your own knowledge as you delve through it and have to look things up to answer what learners need to know. However, how many new users have even heard of these concepts. Recruitment through peer tutoring centers of colleges might also be useful. If the tutoring centers knew there was a place that aimed towards proper peer tutoring in an online format, they would probably come to check it out. The ones that do would be familiar with the process and some would get hooked. Those few would have access to a wide range of college student. They could pass on the information to a targeted audience, and they would present Open Study in the proper light of a moderated peer tutoring platform.

@e.mccormick Exactly! So a couple of week ago i had this idea to hang posters at my school at the start of next schoolyear, like in the cafetaria or specific posters targeting biology/chemistry students like me in the seperate lifescience wing of the school. If everyone would do that, the site would get so many more users. Also i think students from traditional school (so not online) have great potential on OpenStudy because they have to study for test on which they cannot cheat. They would really ask questions to study instead of asking answers. (no offense towards online schools ofcourse, they're not all cheaters :P)
JA1
  • JA1
Overall I love @e.mccormick idea, and I think this could be achieved by putting up a SHORT emphasis on SHORT presentation on the main page, you know how some site have a small little tutorial when you first sign up, the same thing could apply here, and then we could also try to reach out to schools (As in Preetha) and try to get them to give our site some publicity in the school, that way users will benefit since more can come on and out of 1000 users maybe 50 will one day become 99 SS teachers, so it's a very good cycle.
