The definition of a parabola is that it is a set of points that are all an equal distance from a point called the focus, and a line called the directrix. |dw:1370491539974:dw|
The equal distance part makes it a very useful shape for concentration light, sound, radio waves, etc. Auto headlights and spotlights usually have parabolic reflectors to form a nice beam from light which was going in all directions, etc.

If you throw a ball in the air at an angle, and ignore air resistance, the path of the ball will be a parabola.

To find the vertex of the parabola, put it in the form \[(x-h)^2 = 4p(y-k)\]Then you can read off the vertex \((h,k)\), the directrix (\(x=-p\)), and the focus (\(p,0\)). To do that with your equation, we'll complete the square. Do you know how to do that?
