and u know any other 30 60 90 triangle will either be equal to this or a similar triangle to this, and similiar triangles have their side proportion equal

the first Letter of each syllable is the sin or cos or tan
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Lol okay okay Dan enough imagery XD SOH CAH TOA it stand for \[\sin = \frac{ Opposite }{ Hypotenuse }\] \[\cos = \frac{ Adjacent }{ Hypotenuse }\] \[\tan = \frac{ Opposite }{ Adjacent }\]
dan815
  • dan815
O = opposite side, H = hypotenuse and, A = adj side
dan815
  • dan815
adjesecent side is the side that it is connected to but not the hypotenuse
anonymous
  • anonymous
i know what the hypotenuse is i get confused w opposite and adjacent.
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
|dw:1371013268194:dw| This is your triangle.....The hypotenuse is the Longest side (14) Opposite....is the side directly across the angle Adjacent...is the side (not the hypotenuse) that touches the angle
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
|dw:1371013358136:dw|
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
So since Sin = opposite / hypotenuse What is your sin = to ...?
anonymous
  • anonymous
9/25?
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Where did that 25 come from? Also, look above as I have labeled each side of your triangle... Sin = Opposite sides / Hypotenuse side so *for this one* it would be Sin = 5 / 14 right?
anonymous
  • anonymous
i divided 5 by 14 and got .36 and turned it into a fraction
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Oh, no you don't actually divide them...you just use the labels...see how your answer choices are sin = 5/14 etc....they got this just from taking what the side length equals....no actual math is done here
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
So since....now we know that we only look at the labels of the side lengths for these... and we know that sin = 5 / 14 cos = adjacent side / hypotenuse so cos = ...?
anonymous
  • anonymous
9/14?
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Perfect! :) so now just tan is left remember Tan = Opposite / Adjacent so Tan = ...?
anonymous
  • anonymous
5/9 wow thats so easy. i feel stupid now lol
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Haha don't feel stupid...You hadn't learned it yet....and now that you know it....You can apply it to questions you come across in your future :) Great job!

how do you find a angle on a right triangle? with the sides 36, 48, and 60 is the hypotenuse
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
Solving for the actual angle?
dan815
  • dan815
use SOH CAH TOA
anonymous
  • anonymous
yeah
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
For that you would use the inverse trig functions
johnweldon1993
  • johnweldon1993
We use arcsin arccos and arctan to solve for angles...when sides are known
