Question: "Erica bought 3 1/2 yards of fabric. If she uses 2/3 of the fabric to make a curtain, how much will she have left?" > Changed the numerators using the mixed number method >made them have common denominators > Subtracted >then divided to have gotten the answer but I got 2&5/6. The right answer is 1&1/6yrds. Am I on the right track? Any idea what I could've done different? Thanks!!!

you subtracted off 2/3 of a yard what you were supposed to do was subtract off 2/3 of 3 1/2

Kay, thank you both so very much!! but could you explain how you got 7/3?

alternatively, you can multiply 1/3 by 7/2 since you'll have 1/3 of the material left either way, the answer is 7/6 = 1 1/6

It said 2/3 of the fabric; meaning two-thirds of the material....so multiply by 2/3.

Just like saying there six people and 2/3 of them are boys. Number of boys = 2/3 *6 = 4

notice you have this cancellation (the 2's cancel) |dw:1371271076855:dw|

the only thing left is 7 on top and 3 on bottom, so you have 7/3 as a result

Could you explain start to finish in words? the thought process, I mean? I'm still not quite sure I'm following... (thank you for your time)

or you can think of it this way 2/3 x 7/2 multiply the numerators to get 7*2 = 14 multiply the denominators to get 3*2 = 6 so you now have 14/6 you can reduce 14/6 to get 7/3 (divide each piece by the common factor of 2)

Corrected version of your work: > Changed the numerators using the mixed number method >made them have common denominators > Subtracted 2/3 of the actual number. Meaning twp-thirds of 7/2

in 7/2 - 7/3 you made them have common denominators, right? don't you have to do same to top as bottom?
jim_thompson5910
  • jim_thompson5910
correct, you can't subtract until the denominators are the same
jim_thompson5910
  • jim_thompson5910
the LCD is 6 so for 7/2 you multiply top and bottom by 3 7*3 = 21 2*3 = 6 7/2 = 21/6 and for 7/3 you multiply top and bottom by 2 7*2 = 14 3*2 = 6 7/3 = 14/6 ---------------------------------- this means 7/2 - 7/3 is the same as 21/6 - 14/6
