I didn't even "Beta" test it lol
Okay :) Tell me when you do.
  • JA1
lol ok
Color scheme is all wrong...It needs to be the OpenStudy colors. It is far from complete but as far as a beta goes there needs to be more functionality. This is defiantly not an app but a website.
No offence, but it's actually not an app. It's just a website that imports pieces of the OS website. And many of the pages are too heavy to load quickly (could be my phone (HTC One)) Also I can only see 3 math quesitons that were posted 5 hours ago. Hope you'll upgrade it with more functionality :)
Sure, no probelm :) Thanks for the feedback guise. I already have a much-improved version in stock that will be released soon. BTW, were any of you using iOS? I'm wondering... cause it gets converted to an app in iOS, + it looks a lot better... Actually I have no clue how it looks in an Android phone...
Yah, I was using iOS.
  • JA1
Android is horrible tbh it's a cheap looking knockoff of OS :P
@ja1 you forgot to add "in my opinion" It also depends on the skin in android. In my opinion, HTC sense looks a lot better than iOS but the samsung skin is a cheap looking knockoff.
  • JA1
True @thomaster but what I mean is it needs work, major work, but I like the idea, also I thought this was an app not a client my mistake lol
Guys, I'll be very honest. I was making a very great version of this app. The design looks great. It was a native app. Until I throw the last bits together... and guess what. I coudn't get any info from OpenStudy, due to its XSS policies. I'd need an API. So... I just made something using the web urls, threw it together, since it was getting late and people were impatient. Sorry.
  • JA1
lol @dumbsearch2 "People are impatient"
?
I mean I didn't want to keep them waiting.
  • JA1
No I am saying you are right, people are impatient lol
  • JA1
Yes but if you tell people the app is a no show....
  • JA1
Nevermind I am having issues today.... lol
This is how it was looking like.
  • JA1
OMG THAT IS REALLY GOOD
Sorry that I couldn't deliver it.
  • JA1
LET'S RIOT TO DUMBS HOUSE FOR DOING THIS TO US!! xD jk but will oyu be able to later on?
Only if OpenStudy had an API. And since it's so AJAX-oriented, its impossible to extract data using PHP.
  • JA1
bummer :( what if you worked with preetha?
Preetha can't code... lol And they don't have any admins... lol It'll be like your hackathon
IN FACT, whatever happened to the design contest? I had submitted that design as well. No answer. Never got judged.
  • JA1
That hurt me deep in my kidney dumb
  • JA1
Anyways you are right, but I do think they have admins, just they are not as awesome as @shadowfiend @mattfeury and @farmdawgnation
  • JA1
If those guys were here we would get somewhere, btw I think Preetha is making an API (not her but the "admins")
Yes, you're right. :) I guess we should stay optimistic.
When the API is done... I'll make the app :)
  • JA1
Hopefully, I wonder why those guys can't come back *sobs*
MY GAWD @shadowfiend! Its been yearssss hello?
There is an API, though it's not extra-super-straightforward to use. It's definitely crafted and designed for internal use rather than use by external applications.
Are you still an admin?
I haven't very honestly seen you for quite a while
Depends what you mean by admin :) I'm not working on OpenStudy anymore, so in that sense no. I still have admin privileges on site though.
Alright :)
I loved your work on the site. But I think it's slowly getting out-of-date.
I'm actually wondering if they're any admin (programmers for the site) anymore. Everything that is "new" in the site, a regular mod/admin like Preetha can do, like updating the blog, or adding a new subject (I found were the UI for that was).
Check out things like: - http://openstudy.com/api/v1/updates/51d5c4dde4b059f463fe882d - http://openstudy.com/api/v1/users/shadowfiend - http://openstudy.com/api/v1/users/shadowfiend/updates/4f9035b8e4b000310fae4570 The most problematic aspect of these is posting to them, which is not straightforward with the stuff provided by the API.
Can I utilize that API?
Wow! Its all formated! Its a JSON API! omg!
The API exposes functions for posting that are oriented towards the inner workings of Lift's AJAX system (Lift being the web framework we use -> http://liftweb.net/ ). You can munge them a bit and look at how Lift dispatches AJAX requests to get some idea of how to reconstruct the right requests. The key issue is, OpenStudy is a very stateful system. That means you need to maintain an HTTP session, in particular the JSESSIONID cookie, to use it properly. So you'll have to hack part of a browser's functionality into your native client to make it work.
Lift's AJAX functionality is something you can see at http://openstudy.com/ajax_request/liftAjax.js .
Where would the API be for getting all the posts of a particular topic?
You'll see some fields in the JSON that end in “Fn” -> these are meant to be JavaScript code invoked from the client that invokes a server-side function to do things like fan people and such.
Hmm.
It's not going to be super-easy to understand, but I wanted you to know it is possible :)
I've dealt with a lot of JSON apis before.
I'm curious, though. Are there any more admins anymore?
Well, this isn't strictly speaking a pure JSON API. While we emit JSON, it's not independent of our framework. Part of it can be used without any of the infrastructure of Lift, part of it can't.
Sadly I don't know that we exposed an API for listing updates for a given group.
I know Preetha is still around for sure. I haven't kept close track beyond that.
Preetha doesn't seem to know about any of this
at least not very well
And she's not a programmer I believe, she said so.
That's correct. She's a site admin, she's not a developer though. Also, the web inspector is your friend for trying to figure out how everything works on here ;)
Haha, yes. I did glance at some of the resources.
Like the one for the mod controls. ANd how it asks you how long for the suspension.
And I saw the lift, I just never understood that it could be utilized as an API.
See, I didn't know about the /API directory.
So those two are the only API pages?
And yes, I didn't find the listing :\ http://openstudy.com/api/v1/groups/openstudy%20feedback
All righty, that's all I got for now. Love the work you've been doing, dumbsearch, keep it up :)
No problem :) Thanks a heap.
I feel discouraged. I submitted my design for the design contest, but it was never judged. I guess I'll just use the APIs and pick up from there :)
One more question, @shadowfiend. Is there any API for asking questions?
  • JA1
OMG first he resurrects out of no where (yesterday) and now he helps you, I see a ray of hope for OpenStudy :') Anyways can't wait for the app now Dumb :)
  • JA1
Oh and you tagged "shadowfiend." lol
Yep. There's an API. He's so nice, too. He's not working here any more :( Just as I told you- no more admins.
  • JA1
Well there has to be admins :P just not awesome ones like him, and yes he is awesome, I had the privilege to speak with him yesterday ^,^
Really? Why didn't you tell me. And how.
  • JA1
That I spoke to him?
Yes, what happened?
  • JA1
Not much just casual talk lol
Shadow said that he loves the work that I'm doing :) I like to hear that, haha
  • JA1
Well when the creator (1/3 creator) compliments you, take it to heart xD
OH MY GOSH... @shadowfiend commented with nothing but compliments! You should be honored!
I am :]
@shadowfiend is like the yoda of openstudy...Exept less green...and he talks educatedly...and he isnt that short...But otherwise just like yoda
:)
Its great that OpenStudy has an API. But I just don't find were the API is for asking questions...
and he also gave me a medal for this post lol... Preetha did too...
@shadowfiend The APIs don't work anymore :[
Did you remove them intentinally?
