the A U B(thats union).is a set that consists of all the elements of A nd B...without repetion of any element...like u have 3 in both the sets...but it must be present only once in the set A U B...got it??

@satellite73 Mmkay .. @amriju not really ._. this is why i hate math .

\[A\cup B=\{\text{ list of numbers }\}\]

so lets go slow, because once you know what it is asking you are going to be 'really is that all?"

ok first u yhave to understand that for set A nd set B ... A union B is another set that we need to determine...denoted by A U B..got this much..??

ok...a set is a collection of something...anything...like a set of books refer to a collection of books...similarly u can have numbers..or words..eg A={1,54,69,85,14} is a set of numbers...Ur question consists of two sets with numbers in it..

if you have a bag of pretzels, and a can of walnuts; the union of the bag of pretzels with the can of walnuts creates a new set composed of all the elements of both containers. might be a good way of looking at a UNION of sets

Even { A, B, 9, 5, J} is a set...now we come to operations on sets...

Now lets say u r going somewhere with the books by publishers A, B, C, D...on another day...u take books of Publishers B,C,D,E...now u dont have two books of the same publisher...so if I know this and I've seen u on both days...I can assert that u have books of publishers A, B, C, D, E...even though I've seen u carrying B, C, D on both days...now the collection of books refer to the sets...lets say X={ A, B, C, D} and Y= { B, C, D, E}...so X U Y is { A, B, C, D, E}..thats u dont repeat the items if they are present in both sets...but u include them only once...
