A negative number to the left of parentheses changes all the signs after multiplying.
Why wouldn't you multiply the equation in the parentheses to the forty, as well? I've done that many times.
Notice that the 2x inside the parentheses becomes NEGATIVE 16x and the -1 becomes POSTIVE 8. In addition to multiplying by the number tot he left of the parentheses, since the number was negative, all signs changed.
The 40 to the left is not involved in a multiplication. The 40 is involved in a subtraction.
It's as if you had
40 - (2 + 3)
Here you do the subtraction inside the parentheses first getting:
40 - 5
Then you do the subtraction involving the 40:
