The -(-) sign throws me off since I was told that then it'd become positive. Does this mean that now the problem is: -13/20 + 5/12
anonymous
  • anonymous
-13/20 - (-3/12) the subtraction sign and the -3/12 cancels and becomes a addition sign which will give you this -13/20+3/12 which is equal to -2/5

please note the typo in msell 's post you want to do -13/20 - (-5/12)

Would it look something like this: -13/20+3/12 12: 12, 24, 48, 60 20: 20, 40, 60 -13/20 * 4/4 = -52/60 3/12 * 3/3 = 9/60 -52/60 + 9/60 = - 43/60 ?
phi
  • phi
-13/20 * 4/4 = -52/60 you want the bottom to be 60. 3*20 is 60 (NOT 4*20) but you have the right idea, but wrong numbers

You're right, I mixed them up

-13/20+3/12 12: 12, 24, 48, 60 20: 20, 40, 60 -13/20 * 3/3 = -39/60 3/12 * 4/4 = 12/60 -39/60 + 12/60 = - 27/60 ?

jk, -9/20
phi

First, isn't the problem -13/20 - (-5/12) or -13/20 + 5/12 you are doing -13/20+3/12 ( with a 3/12 and not 5/12) second, 4*12 is 48. you want 5*12
anonymous
  • anonymous
Ok, I see that dumb typo I made. But other than that, do I have the method down?
phi
  • phi
except you think 3/12 * 4/4 = 12/60 the top is ok 3*4 = 12 the bottom is 12*4= 48 you really want to multiply top and bottom by 5 most people memorize the multiplication table
