Do you know the difference between a long A and a short A?
anonymous
  • anonymous
Long A's make an (EYY) sound. Like in the word "acorn." It's pronounced (EYY-corn). Get it? Short A's make an (AHH) sound. Like in the word "anagram." It's pronounced (AH-nah-gram). ---------- Look at your two choices. (America - Ancient) (Amigo - Apple) You want to choose the pair where either BOTH A's are long, or both or short.

Yes. "Amigo" is pronounced (ah-mee-goh) And "apple" is (ah-pul) They both have a short A.

No two a's here have the same sound.

I agree. None of the pairs have A's that sound EXACTLY alike. It's just that the A's in "apple" and "amigo" seem to sound a bit more similar to one another than "America" and "ancient." The directions ask us to choose the words that sound more alike. Though they're not EXACTLY alike..."apple" and "amigo" sound like the better choice. You know?
