Is this two segments of the same line? Are these line segments congruent or is there a total length for the line?
Then you also need to know the distance of KM or the ratio of KL to LM. Either way, more information is required.

So set both equation equal to each other and solve for x.

Combine like terms.
Use inverse operations - if a term is positive, subtract it from both sides.
Get all the x terms on one side and the constant terms (numbers without variables) on the other side.
From the graph on your paper we can tell kl=lm there fore 3x + 2 = 5x - 10 3x+2-2=5x-10-2 subtract 2 from both sides. 3x+ 0 =5x-12 3x=5x-12 3x-5x=5x-5x-12 subttract 5x from both sides -2x=0-12 -2x=-12 (-2x)/-2=-12/-2 divide both sides by -2. 1x= 6 -12/-2=6 and of course the -2 and -2 cancel on left side leaving 1x. x=6
